Toy Review: Funko Mystery Mini Retro Games

I’m a complete sucker for blind boxes — especially when they’re on clearance at my grocery store and are retro gaming-themed. While I tend to dabble more on the pinball side of things, I do genuinely love retro video games and arcade cabinets. The packaging for this Funko Mystery Mini blind box is awesome — it looks like an old arcade cab, specifically Dig Dug from Namco.

Funko Mystery Mini

Honestly, Funko did an exceptional job with the packaging. I didn’t want to open it just because it looks so cool, but I needed to know what toy was inside. You could get any of the 12 on the back, and I was slightly hoping for Pac-Man.

So, naturally, I got Dig Dug out of the Dig Dug blind box. I didn’t buy any of the others, so I have no idea if the Pac-Man box comes with Pac-Man. But this was largely anti-climactic. That being said, the toy is stupidly cute. Look at how determined he is to dig. The design is simple and executed well, and it even stands nicely on his own. For $2, I can’t really complain. He makes an excellent addition to my toy shelf. If you find these out in the wild, they are worth buying. I may just go back and get the rest of the set today!

Funko Pop Versions of the Royal Family Coming in February

Funko is releasing the Royal Family in Pop form. The figures will be available in February, before the big Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle in May.

I have to say, walking into a store and asking if they have the Chase Diana Princess of Wales Pop is going to be hilariously awkward for some people. They nailed the looks of their real-life counterparts, though. Prince William especially looks great as a Funko Pop. The Kate Middleton one will sell like crazy. I only wonder why they didn’t produce a Meghan Markle — they would sell a ton of those in the spring. Maybe there will be a wedding set! I desperately want to see pictures of the Queen holding her own Funko Pop.

These are an interesting choice of Pop — kind of like when they did the election ones here in the US last year. Those were pretty popular, so maybe these will be, too.

You can preorder them right here.

Kylo Ren Gets a Special Holographic Funko Pop at Target

Kylo Ren invades theaters this weekend, but Target stores and Funko fans will welcome a special Pop version of him on January 5th. Only available online, a special holographic version of Kylo Ren packaged with a Pop t-shirt will be up for purchase. This is the first of eight weeks in a row that a new Target exclusive Pop will be available for purchase.

The moment millions of Star Wars fans have been waiting for is almost here: Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters this weekend. And we’re celebrating with some out-of-this-world gear plus special Weekend Deals. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Here’s something cool to look forward to in the New Year: “Funko Fridays.” Starting Friday, Jan. 5 and every Friday for eight weeks, we’ll reveal a new, limited-edition Funko figure—only at Target. And the first will have Star Wars fans rejoicing!

Let’s just say that you never know which fun pop-culture icons will make their appearance as Funko figures (you’ll have to stay tuned to A Bullseye View each week for the big reveal). But waiting is hard—and there’s so much Star Wars excitement in the air—that we just have to reveal the first feature a bit early…

Starting Jan. 5, you can nab a Target-exclusive Funko Pop! holographic Kylo Ren figure, including a special-edition t-shirt. But act fast—it’ll only be available on Target.com, while supplies last.

These holographic Star Wars Pops are pretty cool. I have a few of them, and some of them have gone on to be very expensive on the aftermarket due to their popularity. Do an eBay search for “Holographic Darth Maul” sometime. Since all of them have been exclusives as well, making them even more desirable.

The Target exclusive Holographic Kylo Ren Funko Pop and Pop shirt combo is available on January 5th.

There is a Documentary on the Way About the History of Funko

Making Fun: The Story of Funko is a new documentary about the history of the company that in the last few years has become one of the most popular toy brands in the world. We were shown some footage from the film at Funko Fundays at SDCC this past July, and now we have a trailer for the film. Watch it below:

From a small garage in Redmond, Washington to the furthest corners of the earth, Funko’s story is one that is centered around the fans and the global community that arose from their unique passion – a story that spans twenty years, full of joy, ambition, adversity, and… well… toys.

The Eddie Grace film crew spent two years traveling to dozens of locations around the globe, from Vietnam to NYC, Philippines to Everett, Washington, to meet and document the unique and diverse individuals who have shaped the story of Funko.

Come for the toys, stay for the people!

The Weekly Static S01E18: Hogan, Hardwick, and Co-Opting Holidays

fake news and more TV news

Sing it for the boys, sing it for the girls! Every time that you lose it sing it for the world! Sing it from the heart, sing it till you’re nuts! Sing it out for the ones that’ll hate…The Weekly Static!

Now that we’ve gotten our “dos cucharadas” of My Chemical Romance goodness out of the way… I was wondering that maybe if you weren’t doing anything Saturday night, we might:

weekly static s01e09

The Weekly Static is my righteously desperate-yet-endearing attempt at finding the lighter side of and an interesting perspective on the past week in the land of the networks, cable, streaming, smoke signals, cloud formations, and shadow puppets.

Our goal? Pretty simple:

● Offer a blunt, honest perspective on a handful of random TV news posts from the past week that also highlights your relentless team of news-thirsty Bleeding Cool writers and the quality work they do.

● Spotlight a news item we missed, but we’re pretty damn sure you’ll find it interesting.

● Feed my insatiable ego with humble offerings of praise, adulation, social media shares, pizza, Superman Funkos, a plethora of Eisner Awards, at least one write-in vote in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election (and I wish I was joking about that one) and a chance to yell, “Live ! From New York! It’s Saturday Night!” from NBC’s Studio 8H.
