27 Years of Kevin Conroy Batman: Bleeding Cool Interviewed the Voice of Batman at SDCC

Words, Interview, and Photos courtesy of Bleeding Cool’s Jimmy Leszczynski:

I am vengeance, I am the night, I am talking to voice acting icon Kevin Conroy at SDCC 2018.. Kevin has done a few other things, but he is mostly known for his definitive portrayal of Batman on B:TAS, and throughout the sprawling DCAU. He is most likely the voice you hear when you read Batman or anything, including this article, if you are me. Conroy leaps out of the Batmobile on his way to the Batman:The Animated Series (B:TAS) Blu ray release celebration to chat with Bleeding Cool for a few minutes.

The first question thrown to Mr. Conroy asks how does it feel to have fans tell you that they grew up with your voice, that they hear your voice when they read Batman? How does it feel to be so primarily associated with this iconic character. ?

“I’m so proud to have been a part of it for so long. It’s such an amazing character to be a part of. He’s so resonant in the culture. People love him. He’s the only superhero who has no superpowers. All he has is his wits. And his passion to do good. And that really resonates with people. I love being a part of the character”

B:TAS first aired in 1992, slightly after Tim Burton’s Batman had swept the nation. We asked how did Burton’s vision and Michael Keaton’s performance affect Kevin’s portrayal. Kevin responds:

I was not even aware of the Tim Burton Batman movie, which came out about a year before we did ours. I had not seen it at all. So I wasn’t colored by it at all. The only input I had in it at all was the Adam West show, from the 60s and when I told Bruce Timm that at the audition he said ‘No, NO, NO, that’s not what we are doing!’ he said ‘We love him, we love that show, But that’s not what we are doing.’ He brought me up to speed on the legend of the  dark knight, the whole Legacy of Batman. Bruce kind of educated me on that.”

Other notables had played Batman previously- Olan Soule, and Adam West, however Kevin was the first voice actor to use 2 separate voices for Batman, and Bruce Wayne. He tells us why he thinks this layer necessary,

“I said to Bruce Timm, because I had no preconceived images.

He the richest guy in gotham. The most handsomest. The most eligible bachelor. He owns half the city. He puts on a mask and no one knows it’s him?

Seriously? Is this a joke? Couldn’t we make it more, convincing disguise? Maybe I could use a slightly different voice, maybe I could do it closer to my own voice.”

27 years is a pretty long time to voice the same character. The stories have become slightly darker but Conroy’s dependable characterization and voice remains a touchstone for generations of Bat-Fans. We ask Kevin how has his performance changed over the years?

“The audience knows the character so well that if I wasn’t to be true to the character, if I was to phone it in,  they’d know in a heartbeat. They would nail me. The challenge to me over the years in all these different venues, he’s been to be consistent. To be fresh. I think having been a theater actor I’m used to doing a show 8 times a week, you have to learn to make it fresh each night. Each night the audience comes in, is the first night they’ve seen it. They paid 100 bucks  for that seat, they want a show. So you always have to make it new. The challenge for me has been to keep him rooted.”

I learned early on is that Bruce Wayne is the performance,  Batman is who he is.

Is who he became, out of this tragedy. He puts on a suit to face the world, and that’s the performance. – Kevin Conroy

It is truly a mesmerizing experience to talk face to face with Kevin Conroy. When he speaks his baritone tentacles creep down my ear holes and wrap themselves around my optical nerves, squeezing  until- I think I actually see Batman. We also talked about why his favorite stories are the Bruce Wayne centric Perchance to Dream (S1: EP30) and Mask of the Phantasm, how he knew nothing about the Batman character when he auditioned, and how Leslie Howard’s The Scarlet Pimpernel influenced his Performance. Watch the entire video here, I challenge you to not get hypnotized by that haunting voice live. I know I did.

In late 2018, fans will finally be able to enjoy a remastered Blu-ray release of Batman: The Animated Series from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, no release date has been set yet, but Amazon lists the limited edition at $112.99. With 109 episodes, the movies Mask of the Phantasm and Batman and Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero,  behind- the- scenes featurettes about the show, a collection of postcards depicting key moments from the series, and 3 Funko pops of Harley Quinn, Batman, and the Joker in their B:TAS costumes- this collection is sure to be a cornerstone of any true Batman fan’s collection.

Funko Round-Up: Jaws Skateboard! Spider-Man, Coraline, Gremlins, and More

Funko announces tons of new products and licenses every day, let alone every week. It can be a lot to keep up with. So we are here to help. Welcome to the Funko Round-Up! In this edition, a new skate deck, a great Pop Ride, Gremlins, Spider-Man video game Pops, Coraline, and Little Shop of Horrors.

Funko recently introduced a Golden Girls skateboard deck that proved to be
a major hit both at San Diego Comic-Con and Target.

But now it’s Shark Week and there’s no telling where those
apex predators might appear. Be ready for a quick getaway with this Jaws-themed skateboard deck conveying both  your respect for the
apex predator of the ocean and the apex director of pop culture classics.

Their Golden Girls deck was truly a hit. If they are going to continue with these, I am happy to see them do iconic key art like this.

You can now collect Michael Knight and his artificially intelligent
Pontiac Firebird Trans Am named KITT as a Funko Pop! Rides!
Defeat villains like K.A.R.R., Garthe Knight and Goliath and relive the
magic of the series that gave David Hasselhoff his first big break.

This is one of the more iconic Pop Rides they could possibly do, and they nailed it. Wish it could talk though!

Funko Little Shop of Horrors Seymour Funko Little Shop of Horrors Audrey Funko Little Shop of Horrors Orin Funko Little Shop of Horrors Audrey 2 Funko Little Shop of Horrors Audrey 2 Chase Funko Little Shop of Horrors Baby Audry 2 Funko Little Shop of Horrors Audrey 2 Plush

Relive the 1986 Warner Bros. Pictures cult classic rock musical with
this Pop! line that will have you singing “Feed me, Seymour.”

The collection features Seymour holding a small Audrey II,
the man eating plant, Seymour’s love interest Audrey and
her savage dentist boyfriend also make an appearance, along with
Audrey II and a bloody chase indicating the plant recently fed.
Chase is a rarity of 1-in-6!

Little Shop of Horrors is one of those films that everyone loves and I just don’t get. But I am happy for fans that are excited about these! That has to be one of the laziest chase figures ever. There is barely any blood on it! The plush is awesome looking, though — they have been killing it with the giant plush as of late.

Funko Spider-Man Unmasked Spidey Funko Spider-Man Mary Jane Funko Spider-Man Miles Morales Funko Spider-Man Mister Negative

Now these Spider-Man Pops, based on the upcoming video game, are all must-own. Miles and Mary Jane look awesome, and Mister Negative might be one of the coolest Marvel Pops they have ever done.

Funko Gremlins Greta Pop Funko Gremlins Flashing Gremlin Funko Gremlins Vynl Two Pack

I can’t believe they actually made a flashing Gremlin Pop! I have actually seen these in stores already, and the sculpt is incredible on both Pops. I have lost interest in Vynl, to be honest, but this two-pack looks pretty cool.

Funko Coraline in Raincoat Funko Coarline Doll Funko Coraline in Raincoat Chase Funko Coarline Mr Bobinsky Funko Coraline Other Mother Funko Coraline Pop

Finally, Coraline gets a full wave of Pops. They are just the right amount of creepy — something about that Coraline as a Doll Pop creeps me out. Probably the buttons for eyes.

You can preorder most of this stuff already right here.

Choosing Voices with Character: Andrea Romano at SDCC 2018 [Video]

Words, Photos, and Video courtesy of Bleeding Cool’s Jimmy Leszczynski:

Iconic Voice Director Andrea Romano has been bossing around the biggest names in voice acting for quite some time. As a voice talent Agent in the early 1980s,  Andrea would record audition tapes for her clients, and sit in on recording sessions. The folks over at Hanna- Barbera thought she might be a good fit for Casting Director, and the rest is animation history. The Smurfs, Johnny Quest, Pound Puppies, the Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Teen Titans, Static Shock, Justice League, Spongebob Squarepants, and so many more.. But today, Andrea returns to SDCC to sit down with Bleeding Cool and discuss the remastering of Batman:The Animated Series (B:TAS), and what those early days in Gotham were really like.

B:TAS has been hailed by fans as the definitive portrayal of Batman, in any medium, almost since it first aired in late 1992 and the vibrant Andrea is a huge part of that depiction. Romano excitedly sits right down and jumps right in by telling us how it feels to be here today to celebrate the release of Batman:TAS on Blu Ray.

“Who would have thought, 27 years ago, when we said.’ Let’s make this Batman cartoon,’, and we thought we had made something really good. We did. We wanted to make something that we wanted to watch, that we thought would be fun for ourselves.”

Romano continues to explain,

“It is something that I am so proud of, and what is amazing is, it’s still good. If you watch it now, it’s still a good cartoon series. It evolved, it got better, we got better. The animation got better. The voice acting got better. My casting got better. Everything improved so that we all felt like we were growing and learning.”

On taking her time to find just the right voice Romano tells us,

“The animation was going to be different, novel and new. I knew I had to find voices that were, I had to find actors first. If they had iconic voices, voices you could remember. Voices with character, as opposed to people doing character voices. Spongebob Squarepants is a character voice, but Kevin Conroy’s Batman is a voice with character. It’s just got a quality to it. Those are the kind of actors I like to bring in.”

Andrea cites a few examples,

“Like John Vernon, you know has this deep wonderful voice. Or Bob Hastings as the commissioner. Not because I could use them doing multiple voices on the show, but a great voice. Or Bobby Costanzo as Bullock. He was that guy, he was that Italian tough guy.

Andrea’s reputation as a casting director is unparalleled and she is known for taking her time in choosing actors, sometimes considering over 200 voices for a part. We wanted to know if there was anyone that she wanted to cast, but did not get the chance.

Elizabeth Montgomery. Samantha, from Bewitched. I can’t believe she came in. She had to wait a few minutes because I was running behind, recording somebody else. She was being recorded by herself, because her schedule was such. She was already quite sick I said I’m sorry Miss Montgomery. I’m sorry for keeping you waiting. ‘Oh call me Lizzy’ she said.. She couldn’t have been nicer or sweeter, I mean oh my God, Samantha Stevens. Holy Moley!”

Enjoy the full video below. Romano can barely contain her excitement as she also talks about the infamous restrictions they had and what they could not show on television, how the imagination is often more scary than what’s on screen, and how you cannot set out at the beginning to stamp any project as a legacy.

Wynonna Earp SDCC 2018 Roundtable Interview Part 3: Imagining the Ships

The Wynonna Earp train continues to roll on the SyFy channel, with season 3 having just begun the week of SDCC 2018, and then two big announcements at the SDCC panel that made Earpers (nickname given to the amazing fans of the show) scream for joy. Funko Pops will be coming in 2019, and SyFy has picked up the show for fourth season. Before those announcements were made, cast and crew showed up for press roundtable interviews, and I was so happy to be there and get to ask questions for my fellow Earpers and have it here for you to watch.

The newest cast member sat down to join us, Chantel Riley, who plays the very mysterious (since she’s only been in one episode) Katie.

The first half of WayHaught, the couple nickname given to show characters Waverly Earp and Officer Nicole Haught, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, was next. With a charming British accent and bounce in her step that matches her character, Dominique revels in the love fans have given to WayHaught and the community that grown around them. If this show was from Gallifrey, Waverly Earp would be its second heart.

Last to visit was Katherine Barrell, the back half of WayHaught, Officer Nicole Haught, and the character I see as most trying to do what is right — even if it might work against her own best interests. You will see that things got a little strange for me during the interview because Nicole Haught is a redhead, but as it turns out Katherine is not, so when she first sat down I thought she was a new cast member.

That is it for the Wynonna Earp 2018 SDCC press roundtable interviews. I was here for the 2017 roundtable, and I can only hope I will return again in 2019.

For further musings from Joshua Stone you can follow him on the Twitter @1NerdyOne.

Wynonna Earp SDCC 2018 Press Roundtable Part 2: The Doc Holliday Who Writes Comics

Words and Interviews courtesy of Bleeding Cool’s Joshua Stone:

Before those announcements were made, cast and crew showed up for press roundtable interviews, and I was so happy to be there and get to ask questions for my fellow Earpers and have it here for you to watch.

Next was Tim Rozon, who plays Doc Holliday on the show. I’m not sure if Tim likes playing the part of Doc Holliday or writing comic books with Beau Smith more, but I have a feeling depending on the day of the week the answer might change. Tim is a true comic book nerd, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget his excitement last year when he was at SDCC for the first time.

Wynonna Earp SDCC 2018 Press Roundtable Part 2: The Doc Holliday Who Writes Comics

Next was Shamier Anderson, who plays the mysterious fire-breathing Deputy Marshall Dolls. I think Shamier may be one of the funniest people on the show, at least off camera, and definitely appreciates the Earpers and what they’ve done to help make this show what it is.

Last season Varun Saranga was the new guy on the show, playing Jeremy Chetri. This year he is part of the Earp family, and I could not imagine the show without his character’s humor and innocence.

That’s it for Part Two. Look out for the final cluster of interviews later today.

McMahon; possible adverse changes in the regulatory atmosphere and related private sector initiatives; the highly competitive, rapidly changing and increasingly fragmented nature of the markets in which we operate and greater financial resources or marketplace presence of many of our competitors; uncertainties associated with international markets; our difficulty or inability to promote and conduct our live events and/or other businesses if we do not comply with applicable regulations; our dependence on our intellectual property rights, our need to protect those rights, and the risks of our infringement of others’ intellectual property rights; the complexity of our rights agreements across distribution mechanisms and geographical areas; potential substantial liability in the event of accidents or injuries occurring during our physically demanding events including, without limitation, claims relating to CTE; large public events as well as travel to and from such events; our feature film business; our expansion into new or complementary businesses and/or strategic investments; our computer systems and online operations; a possible decline in general economic conditions and disruption in financial markets; our accounts receivable; our revolving credit facility; litigation; our potential failure to meet market expectations for our financial performance, which could adversely affect our stock; Vincent K. McMahon exercising control over our affairs, and his interests may conflict with the holders of our Class A common stock; a substantial number of shares which are eligible for sale by the McMahons and the sale, or the perception of possible sales, of those shares could lower our stock price; and the relatively small public “float” of our Class A common stock. In addition, our dividend is dependent on a number of factors, including, among other things, our liquidity and cash flow, strategic plan (including alternative uses of capital), our financial results and condition, contractual and legal restrictions on the payment of dividends (including under our revolving credit facility), general economic and competitive conditions and such other factors as our Board of Directors may consider relevant. Forward-looking statements made by the Company speak only as of the date made, are subject to change without any obligation on the part of the Company to update or revise them, and undue reliance should not be placed on these statements.
