Green Day, Weezer, Fall Out Boy Tour vs. San Diego Comic-Con

There will be plenty of distractions taking place in America’s Finest City over the 23rd-26th July 2020 but it looks like San Diego will not just have Comic-Con to deal with that weekend: rockers Green Day, along with support acts Weezer and Fall Out Boy, have announced a huge European and North American tour – and the Friday 24th July Petco Park date just so happens to coincide with SDCC 2020.

This show will be of much interest to that demographic that might not want to camp out for Saturday’s Hall H, Ballroom 20 or Indigo Ballroom content, or even the Funko Funatics taking over the Manchester Grand Hyatt Ballroom, let alone the comics glitterati and fans attending the gala Eisner Awards ceremony in the Hilton Bayfront that Friday. God forbid you’re a local resident wanting to park anywhere remotely near Downtown that evening.

Dubbed the Hella Mega Tour and kicking off in Paris on June 13th before making its way across Europe and the UK, eventually hitting Seattle in July and then pinballing across America, Rolling Stone reports that the concerts will feature new material from each of the acts, as teased by three music videos released to promote the tour, including Fall Out Boy’s collaboration with Wyclef Jean.

San Diego Comic-Con notoriously attracts over 130,000 to the city to participate in SDCC in one form or another and dumps an approximate $150 million into the local economy. Green Day haven’t played in San Diego since September 2017 which means die-hard fans will come out of the woodwork for this show and be another contribution to that impressive income, no doubt. (Sorry, ’90s rockers, No Doubt are not also on the bill.)

Petco Park has been the home of a number of SDCC-related off-sites and activations in the past, seeing the likes of Nerd HQ, Nerdist/Geek & Sundry and MTV all taking up residence, but with increasing venue costs and more and more distractions scattered the city over the weekend, the stadium has found itself vacant in recent years. This show will be a way for Petco to recoup some of that ambient income floating around San Diego, as well as giving those camped out across at the Convention Center a lovely soundtrack to their attempts at getting some sleep. Best of luck with that, nerds!
