Pop Christmas was Fun(ko)

I have been getting more and more into Funko Pops lately.  The latest and greatest additions to my collection came this Christmas from co workers, friends and relatives. First came Justice League Movie Flash.  Justice League FlashThen the Hall of Justice.  Which came with a Super Friends style Batman.  Finally, Hulkbuster Armor Iron Man to round out the season.  A triple play (or is it quadruple?).  I love them all in their own ways.  Hall And BatmanFlash is from an alternate universe from all of the Pops I currently own, making getting him during Cw’s Crisis event perfect.  As a life long Super-Friends fan, the Hall is an amazing backdrop piece that is just cool to own on so many levels (more on that another time).  And Hulkbuster complements my growing Avengers movie verse so well (maybe some more on that later too.Hulkbuster

When those around you get you, it makes your heart sing.

Hoping everyone had a great holiday!

-Superfriend.

Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice …

One Four All

Fantastic Four Funko Pops: Original Versus Modern Designs

It’s Fantastic Four day here at Bleeding Cool as we get excited yet again as we reviewed the whole wave of the Fantastic Four Funko Pops. If you did not check them out we have split the entire wave of Funko Pop figures into four separate reviews each one covering a specific part of Fantastic Four history. If you’re a fan of Funko you definitely should check them out and see which ones you want to add to your collection. However this time we’re changing it up as we want to look to the past with Funko.

If you didn’t know these aren’t the first Fantastic Four Funko Pops to come out. The Thing and Dr. Doom we’re already popified back between 2011 and 2013 as one of the first waves of Marvel Pops to come out. Being a Funko collector I have these two figures already and I wanted us to take a look at these characters and just see how far Funko has come since then.

The Thing is first and was originally released back in 2011 way back before Funko really got famous. He was numbered at 09 and was released in the second wave of the Marvel Universe Pops. If you’re new to Funko you probably didn’t know but most of the original Funko Pops were the same body mold with just different details on them. It was definitely something simple and fun and a lot of collectors still look to obtain for their collections. Right off the bat, you can tell there are major and definite differences between the characters not only from the mold itself but in the packaging. Funko has upgraded its packaging with more vibrant logos and more details on its box.

The characters models themselves just speak for themselves. The original The Thing kinda looks like a rock Kermit, to be honest, but I love it. The old one it’s just so simple and basic and being such a big fan of the Fantastic Four I just had to have it. You can’t deny how amazing the new mold is compared to the old one. He’s way more vibrant and dynamic with a huge color difference from the bright orange to the more Thing styled color. The Fantastic Four has been such an iconic family that it’s not surprising that they updated their molds with the new release. As Funko goes on you can see that they are getting better and better with the designs and as of this moment the skies the limit. I won’t be able to help you secure an old Thing but I can direct you to buy one of the new ones and you can find him located here.

The next character we are going to be looking at is none other than the Fantastic Four number one bad guy Dr. Doom. The original Doctor Doom came out in 2013 and he is number 17 of the original Marvel Universe Funko Pop characters. After 7 years we finally got to see a newly updated version in the newest wave a Fantastic Four Pops. You can easily see a difference between the boxes just like The Thing. You can definitely see that Funk has added a lot more thought and design into the packaging. It’s the small details that really show and I’m sure it’ll get even more impressive in the future.

Doctor Doom himself is very different now from his older Funko counterpart. I do like how the mask in the 2013 version is more fitted to his face and you can see the skin around his eyes. While the new one mainly sticks to the normal Funko eyes with the mask snuck and update on his face. The old one features the old iconic body while the new one is more dynamic and posed. This is an easy representation just to show you how far Funko has come from their beginnings and I can only imagine what is on the horizon next. I will not be able to help you locate your own original Dr. Doom but I can direct you to find one of the newer ones and you can find him located here.

The Fantastic Four Storm Siblings Get Funko Pop Exclusives [Review]

Our final part of the ongoing Fantastic Four Funko Pop review is; The Exclusives. There are four exclusive Fantastic Four Funko Pop vinyl figures. The first one was a GameStop exclusive Invisible Girl, a Hot Topic exclusive Human Torch, Barnes & Noble exclusive The Thing, and a Specialty Series glow-in-the-dark Human Torch. Looks they didn’t want to give Mr. Fantastic a variant in this wave but I’m sure we will see one later on. We were able to get our hands on two of the current four exclusives. When we get the other ones in hand we will do coverage on them as well.

This review will be covering brother and sister combo Johnny and Susan Storm and their Funko Pop exclusives. First up is the GameStop exclusive Invisible Girl. Her box is the same as the original except there is a GameStop exclusive sticker on the window.

This is kind of a lazy exclusive and I really wish they did a lot more with it. The best way to showcase the differences with her variant is by shown you side to side comparisons with the original. The only difference here is her legs are semi-translucent showing us as if she was about to go invisible. I’m curious if they were trying not to copy the Chase variant of The Incredibles Violet. A different pose or a whole bodied camouflage would’ve been a better take than just the translucent legs. However, I am a completionist so I needed to have her for my set it’s interesting and I do like it but I wish there was more to it.

As for her brother Johnny Storm a.k.a. the Human Torch has an exclusive that is worthy. This Hot Topic exclusive figure is the right kind of exclusive as it shows Johnny Storm with fire elements. The box Isn’t a simple sticker swap as the new mold is posted on the front, side, and back.

The figure itself is pretty awesome you get to see the Human Torch powered down with his hands and feet ignited. You can see his iconic blue costume with the Fantastic Four logo in the center. You do see the same flame elements that we see in the full bodied Human Torch figure. This is a pretty nice exclusive and I’m glad we got to see a power down human Johnny Storm. This is a must have for any Human Torch fan of the Fantastic Four.

The Fantastic Four Aren’t Ready for Doctor Doom [Funko Review]

The third part of our ongoing a Fantastic Four Funko Pop review and we are heading back to Earth. We have already seen the Four Family, we’ve traveled to the cosmos, and now we return home. In this review, there are three characters who will be looking at the Fantastic Four’s faithful Robot opinion H.E.R.B.I.E, their first villain Mole Man and finally their greatest nemesis Dr. Doom.

There are 14 Funko Pop Fantastic Four figures that have been released. Three are retailer exclusives and one is a specialty series that can be found at local comic shops. We do have two of the retailer exclusives in our possession, as well as all of the common, releases. We have split our Fantastic Four review into FOUR parts, the first one is The Family, the second is Cosmic Beings, third is Earth in the last one we have is Exclusives. This way you can look at the figures you want with that being lost with all of the releases in this wave.

The first stop is the Fantastic Four’s robot H.E.R.B.I.E. This robot was originally created to help search for Galactus but after that comic book arc, he stayed on the series and is a valued member of the team. This is a pretty awesome and your unique character to throw in the first wave. It definitely is a nod to comic book fans. Nothing is really special about his box like the rest and it does have the FF logo as a backdrop inside the packaging which is a nice touch.

The Funko Pop itself is pretty small but packed with detail. His big head lightens up the room as his bright yellow eyes stare at you. He does have an attached display stand on him that shows him dying off the ground. His front does have electronic parts and that gives them character. There’s a nice little addition for any Fantastic Four fan and comic fans to definitely be happy that they’re faithful H.E.R.B.I.E made the cut.

Now we are moving under Earth’s surface as we go against the Fantastic Four hours first villain the Mole Man. I’m not surprised the Mole Man made the cut in the first wave of their Funko Pop debut. Nothing is really special about his box and it’s just like the rest of the wave.

I was kind of hesitant to buy this one but when I opened him up I was glad I made the purchase. This Funko Pop is very nicely detailed and designed. They put a lot of detail on his face from his smirk to the wrinkles on his forehead. The hair is nicely done and his outfit is just right. They gave him a wooden bow staff which he is seen with him in the comics. The color of his skin and the greens of his costume definitely compliment each other and it is a nice figure all around. Mole Man is definitely a must-own for any true Fantastic Four fan to add to their Marvel collection.

Our last Fantastic Four character is none other than their arch-rival and nemesis Doctor Doom. This was definitely a Funko Pop a lot of fans are excited to see again. One was released back in 2013, but now we get a newly remastered and updated version. Nothing is really special about his box and I do kind of wish there was some sort difference on the box.

The Doctor Doom Funko Pop vinyl is definitely well detailed and does right by this Fantastic Four character. Doctor Doom is definitely one of my favorite Marvel super villains and I was definitely was glad to add him to my collection. His outfit is very well-designed and his mask is pretty spot on to the comics. You can definitely tell that Funko has changed up their game with so many dynamic poses that these new molds are put in. If you missed the release of the first Doctor Doom that came out this is definitely a great close second. This is easily a must-have figure for anyone trying to complete the Fantastic Four set.

Bow before Doom.

The Fantastic Four Funko Pops are currently in stores and you can still find them online in a located here. I would suggest GameStops would be one of your best bets to find them but a lot of stores were only getting in one per store. However, they could have restocked since then. To save you the time you can pre-order them all here. With such a massive release I hope we can see more Fantastic Four characters come in the future like maybe Doom 2099 and other supporting FF villains. Who knows what will be on the horizon next for our favorite Fantastic Four heroes and villains from Funko.
