I’m only twenty-three for another hour, give or take, but I’m a fan of yours and I need a good mistake. I’m not a sinner or preacher, all I have is slight of hand. I do magic tricks for… The Weekly Static! Whether it’s “welcome” or “welcome back,” it’s great to have you join us as we assume squatters’ rights on this patch of pop culture property.

But before we get to that that — and not to freak you out or anything — but I think you’ve got a…

…crawling on your shoulder. Hold on! Think I got it!

The Weekly Static is my righteously desperate-yet-endearing attempt at finding the lighter side and an interesting perspective on the past week in the land of the networks, cable, streaming, smoke signals, cloud formations, and shadow puppets.

Our goal? Pretty simple:

● Offer a blunt, honest perspective on a handful of random TV news posts from the past week that also highlights your relentless team of news-thirsty Bleeding Cool writers and the quality work they do.

● Spotlight a news item we missed, but we’re pretty damn sure you’ll find it interesting.

● Feed my insatiable ego with humble offerings of praise, adulation, social media shares, pizza, Superman Funkos, and a plethora of Eisner Award nominations. And at least one write-in vote in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election (and I wish I was joking about that one).

Funko Roundup: Saga, Star Wars, Monster Hunter, Bendy, and More!

Funko never stops announcing things, being one of the most active toy manufacturers around. This week was no different, with a bunch of new products and licences coming. So, let’s take a look at some of the new stuff coming to our collections, shall we?

First up is Monster Hunters! The hugely popular game series gets four Pops to start with. I’m sure more will be coming with how popular these games are. I have never played any of them, so the cat Pop raises some questions for me, but they look cool nevertheless. Look for these in February.

Next up are more game-related Pops, as the fan-favorite puzzle game Bendy and the Ink Machine gets the Funko treatment. It’s another game that I want to play, just lack the time to do so. These look amazing, however. As an old-school animation fan, just the look of these makes me want all of them. When I first saw them I thought they were from a long-lost Disney film or something. These will be at Hot Topic first exclusively in January then everywhere in April.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out in one week, so why not have even more Star Wars Funko in our lives? First up is some OT Mystery Mini plush keychains. These are pretty adorable, with the Jawa being the one I would want to get for myself. The C-3PO looks hysterical, however. He looks like he has a creepy baby head. We are also getting a Vice Admiral Holdo Pop. Played by Laura Dern in the film, not a ton is known about this character (that I have read, anyway; I’m on spoiler watch), so for now I will temper my excitement until after it opens. These will be in stores in January.

Finally, the latest in the Funko Specialty Series has been revealed, and it is a special version of Alana holding baby Hazel from the mega-hit comic Saga. Specialty Series releases are usually found only in places like comic shops and such, as a thank-you to smaller stores for carrying Funko products. This one might prove to be their most popular yet. Look for that one in stores sometime next spring.

Funko Closes Acquisition of UK Based Animation Studio

Will Create In-house Production Capability to be Named Funko Animation Studios

 

EVERETT, Wash., Dec. 05, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Funko, Inc. (“Funko,” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq:FNKO), a leading pop culture consumer products company, today reported it has closed the acquisition of A Large Evil Corporation (“Evil Corp”), an award winning animation production company.

Founded in 2006 and based in Bath, United Kingdom, Evil Corp is a design and animation studio that has been producing short animated product videos with Funko since 2014. In conjunction with the acquisition Evil Corp will now operate under the name “Funko Animation Studios” and founders Guy Thomson and Seth Watkins will stay on as General Managers.

“Since 2014 we have produced the majority of our animated product videos with this innovative and fantastically creative studio and we are excited to move this function in house,” said Brian Mariotti, CEO of Funko. “We have seen firsthand how well received these shorts are from our fans and we look forward to continuing to produce these high caliber product videos while also creating original Funko content. The first collaboration, “Spellbound,” debuted in November 2016, featuring the characters of Iron Man, Spider-Man and Loki and has reached over 1.1 million views to-date with subsequent Marvel Funko shorts garnering well over 5 million views.
