Hydra Cap Gets His Own Funko In Hot Topic Exclusive Variant

Feeling nostalgic for a bygone historical era? Missed out on getting your hands on one of those Hydra shirts Marvel was pushing on retailers? Well, you’re in luck! Now you can own your very own Hydra Cap Funko, as the villain of Marvel’s Secret Empire super-mega-crossover event returns as a tiny, adorable, vinyl fascist with the Hot Topic Exclusive version of the Civil Warrior Funko Pop!

The figure is part of a set of Contest of Champions Funkos announced today, with Civil Warrior an armored version of Captain America introduced in the game in 2016. Civil Warrior comes from a timeline where the original Civil War ended with Steve Rogers killing Tony Stark, and so he becomes the Civil Warrior in Stark’s honor. That’s a much better origin story than “was always a secret Hydra Agent.”

But as we pointed out back in May, the armored Hydra Cap from the latter issues of Secret Empire looked an awful lot like the Civil Warrior, except for his noticeable change in color scheme.

It looks like Funko has made that connection canon. You can get your own cute little fascist dictator and display it proudly on your desk starting in February, and only at Hot Topic. Just don’t let it anywhere near that Warren Ellis Funko, if you know what’s good for it.

Contest Of Champions Gets Some Funky Funkos, Including Secret Empire Cap

Contest of Champions, the popular Marvel mobile game, is getting a pretty big wave of Funko Pops. While I have never played the game myself, millions of others have, and I am sure that they will be excited about these. As with most other waves of Funko Pops, there will be tons of exclusives as well, including a kind of surprising one. These will all be hitting stores in February.

Marvel Contest of Champions Funko Pops

I think it’s safe to say that even non-players are going to be falling all over themselves to get Venompool. That one is a licence to print money at this point. From a game prospective, I have no clue how popular that version is. I do know however that the What If? comic is insanely popular. So expect a tough time getting to that one. Howard the Duck looks insane in that mech suit. And Groot with a beard is amazing.

Marvel Contest of Champions Funko Pop Exclusives

contest of champions funko secret empire captain america

Whelp, there it is — a Secret Empire Captain America toy. Did not think we would ever see any merch made from that, but here we are. It will be exclusive to Hot Topic. I am curious to see how fast this one flies off the shelf. My guess is not very quickly.

For selfie fans, GameStop is getting a Venompool exclusive with a phone. Hey, Gwenpool got one, so why not? We get a very angry looking glow-in-the-dark version of King Groot at Target, and finally a Punisher 2099 Pop at Walgreens. Walgreens has had a few exclusive Punisher products the last couple years — a Thunderbolts Pop with Red accents and a Jim Lee-inspired classic Punisher Marvel Legends figure from Hasbro.

You can preorder the regular releases already here. Good luck, Venompool fans!

Unboxing The Last Jedi Funko Smuggler’s Bounty Star Wars Box

Star Wars: The Last Jedi finally comes out in three weeks. There was little doubt what the theme of the latest Funko Smuggler’s Bounty box would be. Especially since it was coming so close to release. At this point with these boxes, they have have started to surprise folks who order by changing up the types of products inside on us. Gone is the standard Pop(s)/t-shirt/patch/pin set-up. Across all of their subscription boxes, they have made an active choice to not offer the same products month to month. With that in mind, lets take a look at their latest Star Wars box.

Star Wars The Last Jedi Funko Smuggler’s Bounty Box

Funko Smugglers Bounty Star Wars The Last Jedi Box 2 Funko Smugglers Bounty Star Wars The Last Jedi Box 3 Funko Smugglers Bounty Star Wars The Last Jedi Box 4 Funko Smugglers Bounty Star Wars The Last Jedi Box 1

Ok so-gone are the popular patch and pin that was included in just about every other Funko box. That sucks, I know myself and many others who like that part of the box the most. Now if they go back to it there will always be that box or two that will be missing. Weird decision to make there. Also gone from this specific box is the usual t-shirt. While that doesn’t bother me at all, I was hoping for more than a bandanna and a vinyl keychain. The bandanna will look cool on a wall I guess, and I am willing to bet most people won’t wear it. This reminds me of the sweat bands that came in the 40th Anniversary box earlier this year. It feels just thrown in. Same for the keychain. I got this same one at Fundays at SDCC and it ripped pretty much right away.

The socks are awesome. I am wearing them as I type this actually. They are comfy and I feel like they should include these in every box. The Mystery Mini is hands down my favorite thing in here. As a huge Luke Skywalker fan and collector, it sucks that I have to go to eBay to get the other version, but oh well. The sculpts on these Star Wars Mystery Minis are top notch. Really stellar stuff.

Funko Smugglers Bounty Star Wars The Last Jedi Box 5 Funko Smugglers Bounty Star Wars The Last Jedi Box 6 Funko Smugglers Bounty Star Wars The Last Jedi Box 8

Then we have the Pop. It is a deluxe Pop this time. They revealed it way ahead of the box closing, so we all knew this was in here. I will say this-I do not like this version of the X-Wing at all. I hate the colors together, and I liked the blue striped version from the beginning of The Force Awakens so much more. Poe Dameron is not high on my list of favorite new Star Wars characters either. So this does nothing for me. The Pop itself is amazing however. Pop rides were made for Star Wars. The ships always look great, they always nail the details, and I love that they raise them up off the base with risers to simulate flying and such. The paint aps are terrible on mine, you can even see in the one picture where the orange is coming up onto the wing for instance.

Overall, this is a good box for the value alone, but the contents are boring to me. If they had not included the bandanna and keychain and given us a patch and pin, I would be much happier. And the biggest question of all:

HOW DOES THIS BOX CONTAIN NO PORGS??????

The next box is in January, and the theme is Sith. You can preorder one for yourself here.

Riverdale Funko Pops Are Coming Soon!

Riverdale Funko Pops have been revealed! Thanks to some fans that got their hands on two of them at Funko HQ this weekend, we know that the first wave will consist of Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and Cheryl Blossom.

Riverdale Funko Pops 1 Riverdale Funko Pops 2 Riverdale Funko Pops 3

A couple things here. It looks like Hot Topic will receive an early release for these. That is what the red sticker on the Archie figure is. This will also not be the first time that Hot Topic has gotten exclusive rights to Funko before other retailers. The other takeaway- we seem to be getting two versions of Jughead. One he is in his sweater look, the Hot Topic exclusive looks like he will be sporting his Serpents jacket. Curiously, neither have him in his now-iconic beanie hat. Seriously- try going to a store and buying one of those things. It is harder than trying to buy Fingerlings right now.

These have not been formally announced by Funko yet. Riverdale is one of the few bright spots for network television at the moment. With its rabid fanbase, these will be THE Funko Pops to get when they come out. Since these have boxed versions already and such, I would say we should see them in stores in January/February. Hot Topic first, then everywhere soon after. I would also expect a healthy number of exclusives.

The Weekly Static S01E15: Harley, Happy!, Walkers, And More!

dana scully and more tv news

I’m the king of recap, there is none higher, so sucker MC’s should probably call me “sire.” To burn my kingdom, you must use fire, but I won’t stop rockin’ till…The Weekly Static!

Now while I work on getting my cockles up to a respectable level of warmth, take a minute to check out your…

weekly static s01e09

So with mad respect to the great Run-DMC – here’s what all the fuss is about: The Weekly Static is my righteously desperate-yet-endearing attempt at finding the lighter side and an interesting perspective on the past week in the land of the networks, cable, streaming, smoke signals, cloud formations, and shadow puppets.

Our goal? Pretty simple:

● Offer a blunt, honest perspective on a handful of random TV news posts from the past week that also highlights your relentless team of news-thirsty Bleeding Cool writers and the quality work they do.

● Spotlight a news item we missed, but we’re pretty damn sure you’ll find it interesting.

● Feed my insatiable ego with humble offerings of praise, adulation, social media shares, pizza, Superman Funkos, and a plethora of Eisner Award nominations. And at least one write-in vote in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election.

Hear ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s Polka Spin on the Squidbillies Theme

weekly static s01e15 tv recap

“Since premiering more than a decade ago, Adult Swim’s far-out cartoon Squidbillies has had its theme song covered by a litany of artists ranging from T-Pain to Father John Misty to the B-52s. Considering his history of riffing on institutional tunes — and championing absurdist comedy — it was only a matter of time before ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic put his signature spin on the well-known theme, which EW is exclusively premiering above.

‘I think any song sounds significantly better as a polka,’ Yankovic tells EW, ‘and the Squidbillies theme is certainly no exception.’”
