Yondu Meets Mary Poppins in Custom Funko Pop! Figure

“I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!”

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 was filled with hilarious moments, but few made audiences laugh harder than Yondu Udonta’s unrestrained glee at being compared to Mary Poppins in the final act of the movie. Apparently, there are plenty of fans who feel this way — which is why one of them created a custom Funko Pop! figure, making the joke quite literal.

Twitter user @Funkoboss has an account dedicated to the large-eyed vinyl figures. Unlike most collectors, though, @Funkoboss customizes the figures, to best capture characters in particular outfits or moments — or, in this case, to visually represent a joke.

Yondu and Star-Lord shared many of the movie’s most powerful scenes, and their relationship was a highlight for film-goers and the actors alike.

Of course, in the film Yondu didn’t have a magical umbrella; he slowed his descent by using his whistle-arrow in a clever way. Still, after being told how cool Mary Poppins is, one would hope he would be honored to be clad in her trademark black coat and hat, and to wield her magical umbrella. Unlike many of @Funkoboss’ other custom jobs, this figure doesn’t represent a literal interpretation of a movie or show, but rather a metaphor. One would think that former Ravager Taserface would appreciate a good metaphor…

If you check out the Twitter account, you can see all sorts of other custom figures, everything from Once Upon a Time to John Wick and The Mighty Ducks. Yondu actor Michael Rooker even gets represented again in custom figures from The Walking Dead, in which he played Merle Dixon.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Kurt Russell, and Michael Rooker as Yondu. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now playing in theaters.

Funko Unveils Wonder Woman Movie Toy Line

With Toy Fair kicking off this weekend in New York City, merchandisers are already debuting their lines of upcoming products. Helping to lead that charge is the ubiquitous Funko, which pays a visit to Themyscira with the first look at its tie-ins to Warner Bros.’ hotly anticipated “Wonder Woman” film.

We’ve already seen Diana in toy form a number of times, but what’s really notable about this iteration is the color palate. While the average Funko comic character is brightly colored, this version of Wonder Woman is tinted sepia; with the Pop! and Rock Candy figures, you feel as if you’re looking at her through a photo filter. That certainly appears to match the aesthetic of director Patty Jenkins’ film. Also notable is Diana’s weapons of choice: Although hher famed Lasso of Truth is slung on her belt, she wields a sword and shield, emphasizing her role as a warrior.

In addition to the Amazon Princess, there will also be Pop! figures of Steve Trevor and Queen Hippolyta. Trevor’s uniform and gun undersocre the movie’s World War I setting, and Hippolyta’s intricate crown and armor are a little busier than the average Pop! figure. The costumes in this movie are going to be complex.

Funko also released an image of a Wonder Woman figure from its Rock Candy line. This figure is based on a younger version of Diana, one who isn’t armored up in patriotic colors, but has the simple tunic and sandals of an ancient Greek warrior.

“Wonder Woman” is the first female-led solo movie of the modern superhero era, which is made clear by the merchandising. There are already several Wonder Woman figures tied to the film, and while Steve Trevor has his share of toys, much of the ocus has been placed on Hippolyta and the Amazons. It’s certainly a noteworthy development, considering female heroes so often receive the short shrift when it comes to toy merchandising.

Arriving Juen 2, “Wonder Woman” stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Lucy Davis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner, Lisa Loven Kongsli and David Thewlis.

DC’s Bombshells Get the Funko Pop! Treatment

The increasingly ubiquitous line of Funko Pop! vinyl figures has expanded even further. Funko has released the first look at a line based on the DC Comics’ popular “DC Bombshells” merchandise line and comic book series.

“Bombshells” has an interesting history. Originally a line of 1940s pinup-style statues based on art by Ant Lucia, the idea was turned into an acclaimed ongoing comic book series in 2015, written by Marguerite Bennett and drawn by various artists including Marguerite Sauvage. The creative team took the original premise (the women of DC comics depicted with vintage remixed looks) and gave the whole aesthetic a context. Or as the Funko website puts it: “When the men are off to fight in World War II, it’s up to the ladies of DC Comics to guard the homefront!”

These figures include the series’ main characters including Harley Quinn, Batgirl, Katana and Wonder Woman. All of them are in their “Bombshells” outfits, with all the dieselpunk trappings you could hope for. The Wonder Woman even comes in a sepia tone variant, for extra period-specific accuracy. These figures will be wildly popular, and hopefully we’ll get Zatanna, Supergirl, Black Canary and Batwoman (with her baseball bat!) in the not-too-distant future.

Funko also announced a few retailer exclusive variants. Those ordering their vinyl figures from ThinkGeek.com will have access to a black-and-white Harley Quinn (to use in your newsreels) and if choose to venture to your local Hot Topic, you’ll be able to pick up the Clown Prince of Crime, who is covered in kisses. The Joker also has a chase variant, which is also completely black and white — except for the kisses.

The first batch of “DC Bombshells” Pop! figures are scheduled to be available in February.

Funko Unveils New Star Wars Galatic Plushies

“Star Wars” has always been uniquely toyetic. A character doesn’t even have to be named in the movies, or have any dialogue, for them to get an action figure. Combine that with Funko’s prolific line of vinyl figures, and there are potentially hundreds of different Star Wars figures to collect. And if you prefer your collectibles to be soft instead of vinyl, Funko’s got you covered with their new line of Galactic “Star Wars” plushies.

Joining their already popular line of superhero plushies, these new collectibles are around 7 or 8 inches tall and range from soft (like C-3PO) to really soft (like Chewbacca). Available now, these initial sets include characters from the original trilogy and “The Force Awakens.” The first batch includes Boba Fett, Darth Vader, Princess Leia (with the cinnamon bun hairstyle), and Han Solo, plus the aforementioned C-3PO and Chewbacca.

The second set brings you a First Order Stormtrooper, Kylo Ren, Rey (in her scavenger gear), Finn, Maz Kanata, and BB-8.

Looking at this list, it feels almost inevitable that Funko will be producing more of these in the future. There are no characters from the prequels for example, and someone out there must want a plushie of Jar Jar Binks. There are also no figures representing the most recent (and very successful) “Star Wars” film “Rogue One”, or the popular “Rebels” cartoon series. Luke Skywalker doesn’t even have a figure in this initial set, and he’s the main character of most of the movies.

So while you count down the days until the first Episode VIII announcement, you have a whole new line of Funko toys to obsess over.

Stranger Things is Getting the Funko Pop! Treatment

Having a hard time waiting for the second season of “Stranger Things”? So is Funko, which is releasing an extensive series of vinyl figures based on the hit Netflix series as part of its Pop! line.

Typically, a television series will receive a few figures of the most popular characters, with maybe a variant or two. However, someone at Funko must really love “Stranger Things,” because it’s getting 10 figures.

Entertainment Weekly has the first look at the toys, which include not one version of Eleven but three: There’s the Eggo-wielding, nose-bleeding version of course, and there’s also a blonde wig variant (also with Eggos but sans nose bleed), and then one featuring Hawkins’ favorite psychic in her diving helmet, ready to enter the traumatic sensory-deprivation chamber.

For fans desperate for #JusticeForBarb, Funko has you covered. The breakout favorite of the cast has huge glasses, and her vinyl freckles are somehow really cute.

All of the boys are getting figures, too: Mike with his walkie-talkie, Dustin with his signature hat and his compass, Lucas with his awesome bandanna and binoculars, and Will with his goofy ’80s haircut. If you prefer Will to be traumatized (or if you’re just a completist), there’s also an Upside Down variant of Will, looking practically zombified.

Finally, there’s the Demogoron. There are two photos of the Demogorgon — one in a monstrous repose, the other with its alien mouth wide open. The two pictures share a series number (428), so it’s unclear whether these are two variant figures, or if the monster’s mouth can somehow articulate.

If you were waiting for Joyce, Jonathan, Nancy, Chief Hopper or another one of your favorite “Stranger Things” character,s you’ll need to keep waiting for a second series of vinyl figures. In the meantime, these will all be available in early 2017.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead and Cowboy Bebop Get Funko Pop! Figures

Well, this is pretty groovy. Funko has unveiled the first figures in its popular Pop! vinyl line based on “Ash vs. the Evil Dead” and the beloved anime “Cowboy Bebop.”

The “Ash vs. Evil Dead” line will feature the four main characters from Starz’s comedy horror series: Ash, Pablo, Kelly and Ruby. If you were worried that Ash would have a simple prosthetic, fear not — he comes with his chainsaw hand and his boomstick. His monster-hunting crew is also armed, Ruby with a bloody knife, Kelly with an ax and Pablo with his weapon of choice, a tiny bottle. Considering none of the figures has a mouth, the likenesses are so strangely on point, it’s uncanny.

The “Cowboy Bebop” line will also bring the four main characters, in this case the crew of the bounty-hunting ship Bebop. Spike Spiegel leads the way in his classic blue suit, with cigarette in hand. He’s accompanied by the ship’s grizzled captain Jet, as well as Faye, wearing an outfit that could only come from an anime. Last, but certainly not least, is the ship’s diminutive hacker Ed. No word yet whether Ed’s canine pal Ein is planned for a subsequent wave, but you have to imagine if these figures do well enough, one may be further down the line.

The “Ash vs. Evil Dead” figures are targeted for release in November, followed by “Cowboy Bebop” in December.

Batman: Arkham Knight’s Red Hood Gets Statue Courtesy of Prime 1 Studio

“Batman: Arkham Knight” is now a little more than a year old — so, at this point, fans may be looking for something to remind them of Rocksteady Studios’ epic conclusion to their Batman trilogy. Enter Prime 1 Studio, which has wowed fans with their uber-realistic statues. This time the toy manufacturer has unveiled a 33-inch statue of Jason Todd, the second Robin, as he appears in the acclaimed game.

Jason Todd was famously killed by the Joker in 1988, when fans called a hotline to vote the sidekick dead. Then, in 2005, DC published “Batman: Under the Hood,” which returned Jason Todd to life — thanks to a continuity alteration caused by “Infinite Crisis” — giving him the Red Hood alias. Jason found a second life as Gotham City’s most murderous vigilante, both in the comics and with fans.

“Arkham Knight” sets itself up as a Batman vs Scarecrow story, but as the game’s story unfolds, it draws more and more heavily from “Under the Hood.” culminating in the reveal of the Red Hood as the mastermind behind it all.

The Red Hood of the video game, and the one captured here in statue form, is much more militarized and armored than his previous appearances. His “hood” is much more of a tactical helmet, and his armor is made of many interlocking pieces, looking all the more impressive as an enormous figure.

This statue would look awesome in any Batman fan’s collection, but start saving now, because Prime 1 Studio’s latest is going to set you back $849 USD.
