Deadpool Meets Bob Ross In Newest Teaser For Deadpool 2

Now we know what that Deadpool Thanksgiving image was for. Fans of Bob Ross will like this teaser homage to the late painter as Ryan Reynolds channels his Happy Little Merc into this Deadpool 2 teaser. It’s interesting how popular Ross is again including the line of Funko Pop! Vinyl figures they’ve recently released. The video plays on Ross’s painting show mixed in with footage from the upcoming film. The video is a bit NSFW, so be warned.

Deadpool

At the moment, the 20th Century Fox synopsis for the film on IMDB reads:

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

Deadpool 2 stars Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Josh Brolin, Brianna Hildebrand, T.J. Miller, Leslie Uggams and Zazie Beetz. It’s slated for release on June 1st, 2018.

DCTV Recap: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, And Legends Are Back

With the return of all the Arrowverse shows this week on the CW, I thought I’d do a quick recap of the shows for anyone who doesn’t care about spoilers and wants to know what happened. For now, we’ll call this the DCTV Recap and could expand into Gotham and other shows later, but for now it’s going to focus on Supergirl, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow.

DCTV Recap

After the long delay, it’s nice to have all the series back. Some of the mysteries were addressed, like who survived on Lian Yu and how long will Barry Allen be in the Speed Force — while others, like what happened to Mon-El, will have to wait. We also got the debut of some new suits for the Flash, Black Canary, and Wild Dog, which means my Funko Pop figures are now outdated again.

We also got to see the introduction of some new characters, such as Morgan Edge (Adrian Pasdar), Reign (Odette Annable) on Supergirl, and the introduction of the Time Bureau on Legends of Tomorrow. However, other big reveals like who Michael Emerson is playing and how the Elongated Man will first show up will have to wait for another day.

Supergirl airs Mondays, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow air Tuesdays, and you can catch Arrow on Thursdays… all on the CW.

Writer/Director Lucky McKee Curates The October Box Of Dread

It is October, the official month of Halloween and Horror. Which means that it’s a perfect time to take a look at the latest Box of Dread subscription box and they’ve really upped their game this month. Starting off with the fact that the Box of Dread now has a cool new box. I really like the logo design.

Box of Dread

And we get a letter from the first Curator of the Box of Dread – director, writer and actor Lucky Mckee. Not sure if this is a guest position or if he’ll be around a while, but either way having things put together by a Masters of Horror writer/director (the episode Sick Girl) is pretty cool.

As part of it being his box to curate, he included a pack of trading cards from Ding Dong, his segment of Tales of Halloween.

And from there it goes into the “Back to School” theme with a Carrie Pop! Vinyl figure. You can’t get much more back to school than the Stephen King classic.

And there’s Pop! Freddy Krueger pencil.

And a Pop! South Park Zombie Kenny keychain. “Oh my God! You killed Kenny! And he’s back!”

And to finish up the Funko fun is a pint size heroes random bag. Haven’t opened mine yet, but I’m hoping for Cthulu.

Also in the box is a DVD copy of All Cheerleaders Die, a movie written and directed by McKee and Chris Silvertson. Synopsis says: A rebel girl signs up a group of cheerleaders to help her take down the captain of their high school football team, but a supernatural turn of events thrusts the girls into a different battle.

And we wrap up with another Stephen King property… not sure it has anything to do with school, but a poster for the new Netflix series Gerald’s Game. Maybe she’s a school teacher.

Aquaman To Lead His Own DC Legion Of Collectors Box

For a long time, Aquaman was somewhat of a joke. It was the punchline on everything from Robot Chicken to the Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The idea of an Aquaman movie seemed about as likely as Paul Reubens being cast as Superman. And then Zack Snyder came along and cast Jason Momoa as the amphibious hero. Now he’s gotten popular enough that Funko is making him the theme of the next DC Legion of Collectors box.

Momoa built his name playing character like Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones and Conan. He looks nothing like the blond hero created by Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris in 1941. No orange shirt, green pants, or the seahorse that were made famous by the ’70s cartoon. And Aquaman is now getting some respect.

Aquaman

Watch the Justice League trailers — he’s a badass. They even make a, “I hear you talk to fish” joke, and he’s still cool. He’s getting his own film which co-stars Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, and Patrick Wilson. And people are excited to see the film next Christmas.

Flash and Green Lantern haven’t even gotten their own DC Legion of Collectors box yet. People always talk about the trilogy of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman… and they try to add Green Lantern or Flash to that list, but maybe it will be Aquaman to rise up to that level. Okay, probably not — but it’s cool to see him finally getting some respect.

Bob Ross Pop! – A Happy Little Vinyl Figure

If you are not a fan of Bob Ross than I feel a bit sorry for you. Born Robert Norman Ross in 1942, Ross was born and raised in Florida and spent his early years working as a carpenter with his father where he would lose part of his left index finger. At 18 he joined the Air Force and became a medical records technician. He rose to the rank of Master Sergeant and spent time at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, where he saw snow and mountains for the first time. While in Alaska, Ross came across a show called the Magic of Oil Painting with Bill Alexander. He studied with Alexander and eventually learned he could make more money painting than in the service. He retired after twenty years in the Air Force and created the show the Joy of Painting.

The early days were lean and Ross decided to get his hair permed to save money on hair cuts. Though he didn’t like the style, it became a trademark look for him as the series became popular and Bob felt compelled to keep it. The show ran from January 11, 1983, to May 17, 1994, with Ross retiring after being diagnosed with Lymphoma. He passed away at the age of 52 on July 4, 1995.

His show would live on in re-runs and in the style of painting he created. He is known for his gentle, zen-like style, often referring to things like ‘happy little trees’ and ‘happy little clouds’… and of course, for his hair. Ross has become a pop culture icon, with mash-up videos popping up on Youtube and of course early this year, Funko announced a Pop! Vinyl figure… which I pre-ordered and had arrive this morning. Here he is in all his glory…

Bob Ross

And if you need a bit more of the Bob Ross Zen today… the Bob Ross remix:

Writer’s Commentary – Amy Chu Talks Red Sonja #4

Dynamite has sent over a new writer’s commentary for Red Sonja #4 with writer Amy Chu. Parody of The Killing Joke cover by Mike McKone. Interiors by Carlos Gomez.

Oh, how time flies! Here we are at issue #4 already. It’s a bit strange for me to be looking at this now, as I’m in between issues 6-7. I’m also doing my taxes as we speak so if this seems rushed, it is … sorry! On the bright side, in 2016 I earned enough from writing comics to actually make this my full time job, whereas three years ago I was peddling my self-published Girls Night Out comics on the weekends. Thanks to all of you for making an honest woman out of me!

Also, huge thanks to all who stopped by my table at WonderCon and FanExpo to let me know their stores were sold out of Red Sonja. One retailer told me he went from 1 Red Sonja to 26 on his pull lists. This is spectacular and I am deeply honored.

So let’s talk about issue #4 itself. Look at all those covers! I love the variety and diversity. I ordered a dozen of the Funko variant for myself. And as for the main McKone cover — brilliant take on the Killing Joke cover, She-Devil style. Thanks, Mike! It gives me something to talk about on my panel Kickass Characters at C2E2 on Sunday!rsvol404covamckone

PAGE ONE

Hmmm… three generations of guys who look awfully similar…

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle — completely made up. Fake news. Stock market crash — real news. There’s nothing new about financial dynasties. I did some research which helped me come up with the idea that maybe Kulan Gath had a hand in it, or at the very least profited handsomely from others misfortunes. How about that big ass Gordon Gecko ‘80s phone?!

Also, did I mention Hank Gault is an anagram?rsvol4004int1

PAGE TWO

SPLASH page just in case you didn’t know, Hank Gault is actually KULAN GATH hence the anagram (but you knew that already, didn’t you, from issue #1?)rsvol4004int2

PAGE THREE

My favorite image in this issue. Carlos really nails the She-Devil look right here! Dynamite, can we get some shirts made, pretty please?!rsvol4004int3

PAGE FOUR

Doh! That guy’s a lot tougher than he looks…The truth about Sonja is she’s a fierce fighter, but also very much reactive and instinctive — she’s not a planner or strategist.

One of the things about writing Red Sonja in modern day is getting to use an intersection of magic and technology. To Sonja and Kulan Gath, and maybe to some of us, they are one and the same. I hope to exploit this more in the next arc.rsvol4004int4

PAGE FIVE

Let’s hear it for technology! Or Jay wouldn’t be able to find her fellow officer Max at the museum!

That’s true, Max doesn’t exactly look like your average Cimmerian. I think Gath was maybe expecting Conan?

Oh the plot thickens; maybe Max is more than a kid from Brooklyn.rsvol4004int5

PAGE SIX

Flashback: here we have the Kulan Gath we’re familiar with, his goofy old hat and robes.

And here we go, the reveal you suspected all along….! (If you didn’t, go back to issues 0-3…)

PAGE SEVEN

Now this shouldn’t come as a huge shocker to you if you’ve been paying attention. Finally, it’s nice to really let Max loose here. I had a few fans come up to me at shows last month to ask what’s up with this Max guy? Now you know…

And no one could be more excited about this than Holly. Now we know, not only is Science Real, but Magic is Real too! (cue They Might Be Giants song…)

PAGE EIGHT

Here Kulan Gath explains his Theory of Relativity: a) time travel is not precise (but we knew that from the Terminator movies) and b) perception of time is relative.

PAGE NINE

Going back to our email thread, I know Carlos decided to try a different looser style for this one page flashback — no panel borders, different page coloring.

Max is an orphaned refugee of war… and where do orphan refugees of war who can magically travel in time and space go to? New York! I was actually, sadly, thinking of Syria when I was writing this. A little over seven years ago I spent a wonderful week in Damascus visiting the ruins and parts of the old city before the $#!+ hit the fan. I had the opportunity to go to Aleppo. I had heard the food there was fantastic, but didn’t go. I should have.

Anyway….

PAGE TEN

This is the exact kind of page that artists are known to hate writers for. I just want you to know, I SWEAR I didn’t ask Carlos to draw all this. I didn’t really have a good vision for this page so wasn’t really quite sure how this page would turn out. Carlos did 99.9% of the work here. I basically said, “maybe Max is levitating some stuff?”

Please nominate Carlos for some kind of award. PLEASE.

PAGE ELEVEN

This is one of the pages that when I got the artwork back, I changed quite a bit to fit the expressions better. In the past Kulan Gath has become such a two dimensional villain, I wanted to bring something more to the character. And I just knew the time was ripe for this old man to make a millennial joke…

PAGE TWELVE

And here comes the Beast! I do believe Carlos really enjoyed drawing this page….

PAGE THIRTEEN

Ack, Gath is such a cad. I can’t wait to bring him down. Yes, as a writer I do get emotionally involved with my characters, and I’m really channeling all my loathing and hostility from current events into this character. And Oscar, his right hand man… what a toady. Okay, back to the story…

PAGE FOURTEEN

Well, Max has some tricks up his sleeve…

“To the death?” Yes, I have watched The Princess Bride a bajillion times and suddenly I have an image of Shawn Wallace grinning…. okay back the story again.

PAGE FIFTEEN

Have you been collecting all the cosplayed variants? From here on out, I hope people remember Red Sonja as the Protector of Cosplayers!

PAGE SIXTEEN

If you’ve never been to the Met Museum, this is one of the best rooms. And incredibly convenient for someone like Red Sonja to stage a fight in.

PAGE SEVENTEEN-EIGHTEEN

Now’s a good time for a double page spread! ….especially when she loses her sword. I usually only see the black and white lettered without the colors so this is the first time I’m seeing it colored, and holy moly there’s a lot of green demon blood!

PAGE NINETEEN

There’s Jay again. We may be needing her in the next issue…

PAGE TWENTY

Now before you go around accusing me of being anti-New York and anti-culture, I LOVE NY and I love the Met Museum. But this is comics and if I get a chance to destroy a landmark without a huge CGI budget I’m going to do it. Kill your darlings, as they say….

I did play around with this ending quite a bit. You and I know, we’re not so dumb to think that Sonja and Max are DEAD, unless I suppose this was an undead kind of story which it’s not. I could still try to trick you into thinking so, but what’s the point of that? More important, I think, is where are Max and Sonja, and how did they get there? Stay tuned to find out!

Questions? I’ll be at Chicago C2E2 this weekend and Calgary Expo the weekend after that. Come by my table to say hi, get your books signed, and ask me non-spoilery questions!

Also, thanks to Tom Napolitano who pitched in to letter for Simon Bowland, whose dear mum passed away. Please keep the Bowland family in your thoughts.

New Defenders Pic Pops A Few Questions To Mind

A new fun promo photo hit the web showing the members of the Defenders posing in front of the Funko Pop versions of their characters. In the picture we see Mike Coulter, Krysten Ritter, Finn Jones and Charlie Cox. Marvel’s The Defenders just finished filming and will premier on 8/18/2017 on Netflix.

defenders1

But when you look at the picture, you have to wonder… isn’t something missing? Let’s take a closer look.

defenders2

Okay, those are the figures seen in the picture. Daredevil, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. The obvious question here is… where is Iron Fist. But that has an obvious answer in that the series only  came out a month ago and Funko has been dong these after the series debut. So the obvious question isn’t necessarily the important one.

I think the question should be… where are the Pop figures from the Luke Cage series? There hasn’t even been an announcement. No Cottonmouth or Diamondback? Diamond Select has already gotten a Luke Cage set of mini-mates out.

And the even bigger question is, where is the Kilgrave Pop? He was announced at the same time as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, but he hasn’t shown up. He’s not even on the back of the box. And we’ve already gotten figures from Daredevil season 2 in stores. Even if he was a store or convention exclusive, you’d think he’d show up on the back of the box.

But hey, it’s cool to see the Defenders posing with the figures.

I’d Like To Thank The Legion Of Collectors… My Mom… The Academy…

Sitting at my desk a few minutes ago, when there was a gentle rapping on my front door… it was only the mailman, nothing more. He handed me a box, from Funko it said… Legion of Collectors Founders Gift it read. Some quick knife work and my prize was free. And then a few photos so all could see…

And enough with rhyming. I was a little meh on the Marvel Collector Corps one-year gift as it was a Captain America medal. But what showed up today is awesome. A gold Batman statue that looks a lot like an award of some kind. Like I should be thanking the academy and using my time to make a political statement. Suicide Squad wins one Oscar and now they want to redesign the statue…
