Does Patrick Hess Like To See Fady Suffer? The Class Panel At MCM London Comic Con

img_5456

The cast and crew of Class came to MCM London Comic Con with Patrick Hess, Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins, Vivian Adeola and Jordan Renzo. So we all got to see the third episode on the big screen, which hit the BBC iPlayer this morning.

And everyone seems to be very happy with the reception the show has received. As Patrick Hess said “even the Daily Mail like us, though maybe not after that.” There was a fair bit of male-on-male action after all.

But Vivian Adeola received the most praise for the episode we saw, an emotionally wrenching show that saw he confronted with her dead father – and the episode made sure to take us through that journey from life to death, giving us a similar experience.

Hess talked about wanting to make a sophisticated show that audiences would not expect to find sitting on the iPlayer on a Saturday morning. Something for an audience who watches HBO, who has a wide movie watching experience.

Fady Elsayed talked about how his believes Hess is deliberately torturing his character, Ram, emphasising the blood of his girlfriend on his face, and tapping his leg… though it was pointed out that his new relationship with April might change that – as something the audience wasn’t expecting.

On that topic, when asked who of the rest of the cast the cast ship, Greg Austin promised that in Series 2 of Class, he and Jordan are  going to try and turn Fady. While Sophie Hopkins wants to ship Corikanus and her dad – in the show. We think.

As for more Doctor Who crossovers, don’t expect anything big? Hess stated how Class has to stand on its own rather than crossover, but there are all sorts of lines and dots you can connect.

The cast talked about a kinship between them on the show, more than in other shows they have worked on. And promised that there was so much laughing and japes that it is bound to leak out onto social media in the next few weeks.

The question was asked, since sixth form lasts two years, how will Class last longer that two series? Hess replied with questions “how long does a series last? Could we have something mega clever in mind for season three?”

He also talked about how important for him the Corikanus/Matteusz relationship was on screen, something he didn’t get to see when he was the target audience’s age and would have really benefitted from.

And they all want action figures and Funko Pop vinyls…. with the response the show got in the room at MCM, they’ll get them.

Former President of Nike Brand, Charles Denson, and Former Chief Strategy Officer of McDonald’s Corporation, Adam Kriger, Named Independent Directors

Everett, WA, October 28, 2016 – Funko, one of the leading creators and innovators of licensed pop culture products, today announced the appointment of Charles Denson and Adam Kriger as independent directors of its Board.

FunkoLogo3

“We are privileged to welcome Charlie and Adam to our Board,” said Brian Mariotti, President and CEO of Funko. “Both bring deep expertise and a proven track record of driving the growth of some of the world’s largest and most respected consumer brands. Charlie’s significant experience and knowledge in building a global brand, having been instrumental in driving the growth and success of the Nike brand around the world, coupled with Adam’s deep expertise in driving strategy to extend and accelerate the growth of brands including McDonalds, Starwood Hotels and Disney will be invaluable as we implement new initiatives to drive future growth. I look forward to benefiting from their significant experience and insight, along with the rest of the Board, as we execute on our long-term growth strategy.”

“Having pioneered the category, Funko is at the center of an emerging pop culture movement with the necessary resources, expertise and relationships across retail channels and content providers to capitalize on the tremendous growth opportunities ahead,” said Mr. Denson. “I look forward to working with Brian, the senior management and my fellow directors, as the Company continues to define and expand the pop culture collectibles market.”

Mr. Denson brings more than three decades of consumer brand experience to Funko. Prior to his retirement in January 2014, he served as President of the Nike Brand for 13 years, during which the Company grew from $9.8B in global revenues, to in excess of $25B. Prior to his role as President, Mr. Denson ran Nike’s U.S. and European operations and pioneered the brand’s expansion into China, India and Brazil. Mr. Denson began his career with Nike in 1979 as an Assistant Manager in one of its original retail stores in Portland, Oregon. Throughout his tenure at the Company, he held several positions within Nike Inc., including Director of U.S. Apparel Sales; Divisional Vice President of U.S. Sales; Divisional Vice President of European Sales, Divisional Vice President and General Manager of Nike Europe. He holds both a B.S. of Marketing degree, as well as an Honorary Doctorate degree from Utah State University.

“As content continues to be king and consumers dedicate a larger portion of their lives to entertainment, there is a growing demand for products that connect consumers with their favorite pop culture content and programming,” said Mr. Kriger. “Funko is at an exciting inflection point in its growth and I’m excited to join the Board as the Company expands into new and adjacent product categories and builds upon its position as the go-to source for everything pop culture.”

With more than 25 years in the hospitality and entertainment industries, Mr. Kriger brings significant expertise in helping to drive the strategy of leading consumer brands. Most recently, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for McDonald’s Corporation, overseeing all aspects of strategy development and execution for the Corporation. Prior to McDonald’s, he served as Senior Vice President of Strategy at Starwood Hotels, Inc., where he orchestrated the launch of Starwood Preferred Guest, one of the world’s best hotel loyalty programs. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Corporate Strategy at The Walt Disney Company, where he led strategy and new business development for the Company’s theme parks, hotels and resorts, and other lines of business. Mr. Kriger earned a B.A. in quantitative economics from Stanford and an MBA from Harvard Business School and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Lake Forest Country Day School.

Batman Hangs In The Balance As DC Teases New Legion Of Collectors Box

Funko and DC have released a new teaser trailer for their upcoming DC Legion of Collectors box focused on Batman Villains. Being this is a random surprise subscription box, they don’t tell you what’s in it, instead they have a fun little seen with Pop! versions of the Joker, Catwoman, Two-Face and the Riddler holding Batman hostage in a precarious and perilous trap… like you do.

I like that the decided to focus on Batman Villains and not just Villains as it leaves it open to have a box with a Rogues theme or Superman Villains theme… I’m looking forward to this box.

Do Funko X-Men Figures Signal The End Of The CompleX?

funko_mysteryThe CompleX is the theory that Marvel Comics is deliberately not pushing or promoting the X-Men line, as the movie/TV and related licensing rights are controlled by Fox Studios, and Marvel Comics isn’t interested in giving that any push.

This exhibits itself in a reduction in X-Men comics being published and their prominence in promotion – their absence even. That licensing is banned or severely restricted, and no cartoons are being produced. And while not as restrictive as the impositions made upon Fantastic Four-related, they have been reported as being imposed by above.

Fox does not receive a cut of Marvel’s comics-based or animation-based X-Men or FF licensing, it’s more about personal politics.

It was explained to me by a senior Marvel executive as more Marvel concentrating on Marvel Studios properties than actively not promoting the others. But it has led to the ridiculous state of X-Men and Fantastic Four characters – even the mention of them – being removed from collections, games, T-shirts and calendars. or statues being halted in mid-production.

Of late , however, relations between Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios have become far frostier. An relations with Fox, certainly regarding the TV series, has suddenly become something verging on the cordial.

And suddenly the leading pop vinyl brand of toys, Funko, has a whole line of X-Men related toys focused on the very nineties iterations that next years ResurreXion titles seem to be clustering around. Their first X-Men figures since… 2014?

Is this the end of the CompleX? At least as far as nineties X-Men go?

Tuxedo-Clad Joker Gets His Own Figure Courtesy of Hot Toys

Tuxedo-Clad Joker Gets His Own Figure Courtesy of Hot Toys

Sure, the reviews might be mixed on “Suicide Squad,” but one thing we can all agree on is how amazingly detailed this new figure is based on Jared Leto’s Joker in the film, courtesy of Hot Toys (via Facebook). The company’s newest DC Comics-based product has the Joker donning his finest threads: A black tuxedo, white bow-tie, purple cane and a gold-plated machine gun.

RELATED: Suicide Squad Extended Cut Runtime and Special Features Revealed

The Hong Kong-based Hot Toys has been transitioning to figures based off media properties over the last few years. Each character is rendered in 1/6th scale, and packaged with accessories and character stand with a themed backdrop. Such is the case with its new tuxedo-clad Joker figure.

This is not Hot Toys’ first rendition of the Joker, as there are versions ranging from the Batman ’66 take, to figures not seen in the actual films — including figures that were sculpted in the “spirit of the movie.” The latest newest version captures Leto’s looks with a newly painted head-sculpt, featuring a more serious “smile.”

The black tuxedo look is a now-classic costume for the character — one that “traces its origins back to the comics.” According to Hot Toys, the finely-tailored costume is an ode the to the “flamboyant makeup and wardrobe that certainly makes (Leto’s) ballsy performance even more fun and memorable.” A specially designed “Suicide Squad”-themed stand and backdrop are also included with purchase.

The formal wear Joker has already been featured by Funko as one of its Pop! figures. Hot Toys is hoping this “very special Joker figure” will make an excellent addition to your collection. With almost ten versions of the dapper degenerate for sale, it only proves that everyone is crazy for a sharp-dressed man. Especially when that sharp-dressed man is a little crazy…
