The DC Primal Age 100-Page Giant is Half-Baked Fun

DC Primal Age is a wonderful idea in theory. Combining the style of the old Masters of the Universe toy line with DC characters is an idea that probably should have happened a long time ago. Now a line of toys from Funko, it is also a 100-page giant comic that can only be found at Target. Featuring six stories, the comic has its moments but ultimately is more fun than good.

The main story is done by Marv Wolfman, Scott Koblish, Tony Avina, and Wes Abbott, and is the longest in the book. It is basically an intro story and formation for the Justice League of the Primal Age. We start with Bruce and Diana fighting over an org of power, interrupted by the Joker. After he gets away with the orb, we find out Joker is working with King Shark and Sandman to find the orbs to destroy villages. From there we are whisked away and meet Aquaman, The Flash, Superman, and Green Lantern, as they race to try and save the island of Themyscira before they can sink it.

Sadly though, every intro and even the ending of the story feel unfinished. The dialogue is very stilted and the story is very confusing right up to when it just ends out of nowhere. I do enjoy me some Koblish artwork, and he does not disappoint here. Clean, clear action scenes and great coloring from Avina keep the pages turning fast, even if the word bubbles confuse you as you read them. Basically creating a backstory for the Primal Age universe, not unlike what DC did for MOTU back in the day, is a difficult task. One wishes that they were given more pages to flesh everything out more.

After the main story, we are treated to five shorts starring different characters and introducing Primal Age versions of others. One thing I will say for the book: this does not feel like it exists just to sell action figures. It very easily could have fallen into that trap, but it doesn’t. Of the short stories, the standouts were the Wonder Woman/ Solomon Grundy one by Jerry Ordway, Wendy Broome, and Saida Temfonte, and the Mister Freeze one by Louise Simonson, Phil Winslade, Carrie Strachan, and Carlos M. Mangual. Mister Freeze as a mage using magic to save his beloved? More of that please. The Batman/ Lucious Fox story, the Joker story, and Superman/Bizzaro stories are all ok, but when a short 10 page story feels about 6 pages too short, that is a problem. Again, some of them feel unfinished. I have no idea if there is a second issue coming out, and it seems like a lot of these stories were ended with the idea that there would be another one. It makes for a very frustrating reading experience. At $9.99, it is a hard sell to ask people to fork the cash over for half stories.

In the end, the DC Primal Age needs another issue. Not because it is mindblowingly good, but because it feels like that is where the end of the stories are. I hate things that are unfinished, and I fear that if the toys don’t sell, we will never see the end.

*RUMOR: Is Funko Developing a Feature Length Pop Film?

A rumor has been going around social media today that Funko, developer of the popular line of Pop vinyl figures, is gearing up with Warner’s to release a feature length film based around a shared universe of Pop figures, ala The LEGO Movie. Daniel Richtman of Super Bro Movies has been tweeting details of what could possibly be included in the film, which would feature multiple properties like Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Stranger Things, Mortal Kombat, and more.

This would be a pretty cool move for Funko, and it would be pretty fun to see all of these different universes running around as Pops onscreen. Funko has produced a ton of animated shorts in the past featuring Marvel, Star Wars, DC, and other characters.

Some characters already confirmed for the Funko movie: Darth Vader, Deadpool, Hellboy, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Care Bears, My Little Pony.

For now though, it is just a rumor. The LEGO Movie was such a game-changer, that it was inevitable that someone else would come along and do something similar. Will Pops running around talking translate to screen well? Would actors and actresses reprise their roles if their Pop figures are featured? Would the Pops have mouths???

For now, we can only speculate. If this becomes official, with things like a director or casting announcements, we will be sure to bring them to you.

BC Toy Spotting: Sunday Special! DC Primal Age, LEGO, NECA, Shazam, and More!

Welcome to the latest edition of BC Toy Spotting! We are in and out of stores pretty much every day, and we figure (ha!) why not show all of our fellow collectors what we are coming across on pegs and shelves. As collectors, we know that staying on top of what is in stores can be almost a full time job, so we are here to help you with your toy hunts and outings. This week we found the new DC Primal Age line, new LEGO sets, NECA figures, Transformers, DST Gallery Statue exclusives, and more. Let’s take a look.

Restocks of new Jurassic World dinos are popping up all over the place. The Dino Rivals have been flying off the shelf round these parts, and Mattel is doing a great job getting restocks to stores.

The Captain Marvel wave of minimates from DST are exclusively at Walgreens right now.

A new Gamestop exclusive Green Lantern Gallery Statue also from DST can be found in stores right now.

New Masters of the Universe Funko Pop Pez dispensers are starting to pop up in stores as well. These are Pez that I wish I had when I was a kid thats for sure.

A new LEGO Star Wars Death Star Escape set is now available. It looks like a great build, and if I pick it up I will keep the box, because it is awesome.

For those who have passed on Hasbro’s newer line of Mighty Muggs, they are now showing up at Five Below stores.

More Transformers: War for Cybertron Siege figures are showing up at Targets and Walmarts.

The first Shazam! figures are showing up at Walmarts, with a 12 inch version of Billy in stores. This one has punching action, along with a talking chip that says 20 phrases.

NECA’s excellent new Ultimate Gremlins Gremlin figure is hitting Targets hard. This is an amazing figure and deserves a spot in every collection.

Joining the Gamestop exclusive Gamer Mickey Pop is a Gamer Minnie!

Mattel’s new Batman line of figures is in stores, with new Rebirth Batman and Two-Face figures available. Big Figs Rebirth Batman is also available.

Finally this week, Funko has shipped to Targets their first waves of DC Primal Age figures and collectibles. Modeled after classic Masters of the Universe figures from the 80’s, this has been a very anticipated release. Each figure comes single-carded, and with relevant accessories.

They are all in with this line, already producing a Castle Grayskull-like model of the Batcave, along with rideable beasts for certain characters. Krypto and others will also be available later.

Merch is also available, including shirts, lunchboxes, and of course the 100-page giant comic. Basically, they want us collectors to be be fully invested in this line.
