2017 Collectibles Countdown #2: Funko Hunting

As I mentioned with the Funko Kingdom Hearts Box, this is a thing that I know is a thing from observing the BC Staff, who live in various parts of the world, and attend various conventions depending on time, place, and circumstances. Often a call goes out for help in finding something that can’t be obtained locally, and often that call is answered. I’m sure it’s much the same everywhere, which is why the map below was so popular right before SDCC this past summer.

Original Headline: Where Can You Get Funko SDCC Exclusives If You Aren’t At The Show? We Have The Answer! Published July 19, 2017

Funko has revealed the list of exclusives that are shared and where to get them if you are not at the show itself.

Many thanks to FunkoPopHunters for doing the awesome job organizing here! It makes me happy some of the Pop Up Shop Animation stuff will be on the Funko Store page. Lots of surprises here as well. Jolly Roger is for sure going to be a huge get if you can get into the booth since he is not shared anywhere. It looks like some of the flocked Pops from the animated shop will be shared, but some others won’t? Maybe it will be an assortment. I really did not expect much from there to be shared at all, so we will take what we can get. And unless you catch them online, good luck finding the shared exclusives with Walmart! the ones in my area have never gotten a single one, so in my opinion, those will be the hardest. Make sure for all of these starting tonight you get the store pages locked and loaded so you are ready to go when everything hits the web. Should be tonight around midnight, so the night owls will have an advantage. If not online, make sure you get to the stores as close to open as possible: Funko shipped everything ahead of time so as long as your store is not lazy, they should be there.

So what is everyone going to go for? Here at the show, I will be trying for the Rock Candy Flinstones, Aragorn and Arwen, the Stranger Things Pops, Leia and R2-D2, and a few others. Fingers crossed for everyone,I hope you all able to get whatever you want without resorting to eBay, since that makes this all way less fun. And happy hunting!

2017 Collectibles Countdown #5: Kingdom Hearts Funko Box

2017 was the year of Funko is a bunch of different ways, and exclusive collector’s boxes is certainly one of them.  I am no Funko collector myself, alas, but I am a collector of very many other things, and I can tell when another collector is really into it from a hundred miles away, and there are at minimum five people on the BC staff who are really into Funko. Searching the BC posts of 2017, it looks like we did 370 posts about Funko on the year.  More than one a day, but I honestly would have guessed more.  Maybe we’ll beat that next year.

Original Headline: Kingdom Hearts Gets An Exclusive Funko Box At Gamestop, Let’s Dive In, Published October 14, 2017

Kingdom Hearts is one of the modern gaming eras most-beloved franchises. There is no disputing that. Since Funko Pops took over the collecting world, people have wanted Kingdom Hearts Pops. We started by getting Disney favorites in their Kingdom Hearts looks. We are about to get the original characters here very shortly. We now are getting versions of both based on worlds inside the game. Halloweentown was first. Goofy and Donald were NYCC shared exclusives with Hot Topic. Sora is a Hot Topic exclusive hitting stores now. And the exclusive that comes in this Gamestop-only box joins them.

Kingdom Hearts Funko Gamestop Box

Kingdom Hearts Gamestop Exclusive Tron Three Pack

Kingdom Hearts FunkoTron Three Pack 1 Kingdom Hearts FunkoTron Three Pack 2 Kingdom Hearts FunkoTron Three Pack 3 Kingdom Hearts FunkoTron Three Pack 4 Kingdom Hearts FunkoTron Three Pack 5 Kingdom Hearts FunkoTron Three Pack 6 Kingdom Hearts FunkoTron Three Pack 7 Kingdom Hearts FunkoTron Three Pack 8

Man…as soon as I saw this three pack it became one of my favorite Pops. The Tron films are very special to me, and the level in the game is a favorite. So as soon as news of this box dropped I frantically searched the 5 Gamestops around me until I could find one.

Once you get the Pops out of the box, the figures look even better. There is not a lot of room for error on these.  The paint jobs on each could be a disaster because of the design. But I am happy to report there is not a single splotch out of place. They really outdid themselves here. Each figure is in scale and has the iconic Tron piping around their grid suits. I can’t decide which is my favorite, so I will just say all of them. Sora looks the coolest in the suit, Donald has the most fun pose, and Goofy has the most expressive face. Pictures do not do them justice, you really need to see them in person.

Kingdom Hearts Gamestop Exclusive Mystery Minis

Kingdom Hearts Funko Mystery Minis 1 Kingdom Hearts Funko Mystery Minis 2 Kingdom Hearts Funko Mystery Minis 3 Kingdom Hearts Funko Mystery Minis 4 Kingdom Hearts Funko Mystery Minis 5

Each box also contains two Kingdom Hearts Mystery Minis. There are four in all: Sora, Riku, Kairi, and a Heartless. I was kind of hoping for Sora and a Heartless, but any combination of the four was ok with me. They pose very well, and the Kairi really pops with the brighter colors.

Each box costs $29.99 and comes with the Tron three pack and two Mystery Minis. There is also a Tron glow in the dark 1/4 variant because life is cruel. To get a shot at that glow chase and completing the Mystery Minis set you will need to buy multiple boxes. I will say that the tron set is well worth the price alone. The Minis are a cool bonus.

If you want to purchase one, stop into your local Gamestop or order one online right here.

Funko Best of For 2017- Pops, Pint Size, and Even Dorbz!

Funko had one crazy year. Almost every single day this year, new products were announced, new licensees acquired, and Pops invaded every corner of store shelves. They put on events at numerous comic cons and events. They opened a new headquarters complete with a tricked out store. They even went public. You can own a little piece of the company now.

funko logo

With all that said, this year saw some of the best products we have ever seen from them. So, I thought we would take a look back at some of them and do a Best of Funko list for the year. A couple things- First, these are my favorites. If you don’t agree: awesome! Tell me why in the comments. Second: no, I do not get my hands on every single Funko release. I am not a millionaire. So things on this list are products I myself have experience with. So, keeping those things in mind- why don’t we jump in?

Best Product Line- Pint Size Heroes

These were THE hit for me from Funko this year. So many different characters, so many different lines. All of them with great detail and paint aps. I have not pulled a single figure from the blind bags that had imperfections personally. Blind bags and boxes are all the rage right now, and while they have Mystery Minis as well, Pint Size feels like what they should have been doing the whole time. Combining Minis with Dorbz, these are the best of both worlds. If you aren’t collecting these, you need to start.

Best Dorbz- Tron

Featuring perfect renditions of the iconic characters from the original Tron, these Dorbz figures could not have been more perfect. While Sark has eluded me so far, I do have both versions of Tron and they have become centerpieces of my collection. Just awesome.

Best Dorbz Ride- Wonder Woman

I mean come on. Look at that. It does not get cuter than that. Not to mention the sculpting job there is top notch.

Best Funko Plush- Stranger Things Demogorgon

There was a lot of competition in this one! Porgs from Star Wars, Rick and Morty, the Disney Princesses. But in the end this adorable take on the big bad from Stranger Things is just too great to ignore. If they had gone the closed mouth route only, then it would be a different story. But the open mouth adds so much color and makes it stand out. Next year I am already calling it- Dart will win.

Best Funko Subscription Box- Marvel Collectors Corps

Funko Marvel Collectors Corps First Appearance Box

These boxes had an up and down year. To be fair here, I do not get the Disney Treasures box, or else that probably would have won. But I do get the other three, and out of those, the most consistently pleasing box has been the Marvel Collectors Corps box. From the Superhero Showdown box that introduced us to Pint Size Heroes to the Hulk box that gave us one of the best Pops ever done to close out the year, every box was a true surprise. A suggestion to Funko though: less black t-shirts. Please.

Best Mystery Minis- Star Wars

Funko Star Wars Mystery Minis Walmart 1 Funko The Last Jedi Mystery Minis

There is no competition here. Ok maybe the Disney Cartoon ones. But the Star Wars with their perfect sculpts, amazing character selection, and interlocking bases take the cake. My only complaint is that the ratios for some of the figures are outrageous (1/75 for Kylo Ren? Come on.) These are the gold standard for Mystery Minis and they will likely never be topped.

Best Funko Event- Fundays 2017

Held at SDCC every year, there is no better fan event in existence that I can think of. From constant giveaways to announcing new products, for 5 hours you are given a fan experience that even your wildest dreams cannot fathom. I walked out of there stunned and praying that I get to go back. This is a company that, contrary to what some would argue, truly takes care of its fans. If you are lucky enough to go to this one year, get ready for the ride of a lifetime.

Best Funko Pop Line- Stranger Things

There are of course lots of choices for this one. I cannot think of another line of regular release Pops that caused so many people to freak out and drive all over to get every single figure than Stranger Things. These releasing became an event. Stores constantly ran out, exclusives went through the roof, and that was before the Season 2 wave hit. Fans wanted Stranger Things merch, and Funko delivered big time.

Best Funko Pop- Pennywise from IT (all versions)

IT was a cultural event when it released into theaters in September. What people may not realize is how bat#$!# insane it was hunting down all the different versions of Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The Chase was retired, then it wasn’t, then it was again. Then it was only at Walgreens. then it was coming randomly from Amazon. The Hot Topic one came and went as quickly as Georgie’s boat went down the sewer drain. Walmart’s exclusive release was such a disaster that they were released through the Funko shop, and still was hard to get. And they all had different eye color variants! Even the regular release dried up fast. Every sculpt is creepy and perfect, every version is iconic, and for all of those reasons this is the Pop of the year.

Funko had a pretty fantastic 2017 figure-wise. Here’s hoping that 2018 is just as special.

Funko Exclusives in Stores Soon, Including Groot, Hellboy, and Gizmoduck!

Funko has three new exclusives hitting a variety of stores in the next month. One of them is hitting shelves as we speak, and the other two will be in stores in January. All three should be pretty desirable for collectors as well, as Marvel, Hellboy, and Duck Tales are all represented.

Baby Groot Funko Pop Exclusive

First up is an FYE Exclusive version of Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. You would think they would be done with Pops from this film but nope! This version has him holding an eye and with a cute grin on his face. He is also wearing his Ravengers uniform. I have so many Groots at this point I am not sure I need another one. But if I run across it I may pick it up. This one is hitting stores right now.

Hellboy Previews Exclusive Funko Pop

Next up is an alternate version of Hellboy holding his sword and such. Now this one out of the three is unmissable. I have the regular version and chase already so I almost feel like I have to get my hands on this one. They did an exceptional job on all of the Hellboy series of Pops so I have to keep the set complete right? This one hits comic shops exclusively through Previews in January.

Gizmoduck Funko Pop

Finally, what might be the most popular of these three. Gizmoduck is coming to Target exclusively. All of the Duck Tales Funko Pops have been a hit, but this one is by far the most wanted. He is such a unique character, and that is reflected in the sculpt of the Pop itself. He was always my favorite character when I was a kid, so I am going to be among the many trying to track this one down. He also hits in January.

Three amazing Funko Pops to close 2017 and start 2018? Sounds perfect to me.
