Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Guitar Sells For Record $6 Million

One of the most coveted gems in the grunge era sold for an unprecedented $6 million at auction. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain used the 1959 Martin D-18E guitar during the band's acoustic performance on MTV Unplugged on November 18, 1993. Five months following the episode, the singer-songwriter took his own life from a self-inflicted gunshot at the age of 27. Their Unplugged appearance was released as a live album. The guitar was sold to Australian Peter Freedman, owner of Røde Microphones, at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, California. Cobain played "About A Girl" from their debut album Bleach and "All Apologies" from their final studio album In Utero.

How the Nirvana Frontman's Guitar Compared to Other Auction Items

By comparison, a custom blue guitar used by Prince at the height of his stardom in the 80s and 90s including his 1984 Purple Rain tour sold for $563,500. Cobain's guitar was originally slated to sell in the range of $100,000-$200,000. The band scored 10 top 40 hits on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, including five No. 1s and four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200. They also won several Grammys, American Music Awards, and MTV Music Video Awards. Four of Nirvana's songs ("All Apologies", "Come As You Are", "In Bloom", and "Smells Like Teen Spirit") reached Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time." In addition to In Utero and Unplugged, the band's most successful album Nevermind reached the publication's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic founded Nirvana in 1987 with Aaron Burckhard on drums. The following year, Burckhard left and the band went through multiple drummers until 1990 when they settled on Dave Grohl. That lineup with guitarist Pat Smear was the one inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility in 2014 with Cobain's widow Courtney Love there to accept on her husband's behalf.

"Black Widow": Begins Natasha's Path of Redemption [TRAILER]

Marvel released the final trailer to the upcoming Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson fronting an all-star cast. The film takes place between Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Natasha (Johansson) reconnects with her family in Russia tying up loose ends confronting the program that created her.

Marvel Studios

Highlights

The latest trailer comes from the perspective of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), who tells her sister Natasha of the nefarious plans led by Taskmaster. He wields a destructive shield in the similar vein of Captain America (Chris Evans). We also meet Natasha's parents Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) and Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour) as the adventure becomes a family affair.

General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (William Hurt) is another noteworthy figure in the trailer. I commend Marvel for still having a use for him. Universal still refuses to budge on doing anything more with their solo Hulk film rights.

"At birth the Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanova) is given to the KGB, which grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action moves to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative.

Origins

Created by Stan Lee, Don Rico, and Don Heck in 1964, Johansson played the MCU incarnation of Black Widow since Phase I. She made her debut in Iron Man 2 (2010). She reprised the role six more times: The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015(, Civil War, Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland with writers Eric Pearson(Thor: Ragnarok), Ned Benson, and Jac Schaeffer. The film also stars O-T Fagbenle and Ray Winstone.

The film will be the first of Phase IV for the MCU as it comes to theaters on May 1st.

"The Office" Alum John Krasinski on Reunion Rumors: "I Would Absolutely Love to Do It"

As arguably the second-biggest beneficiary from NBC's The Office after star Steve Carrell, John Krasinski is fond of his roots. The director and star of A Quiet Place spoke to Esquire about his latest projects and humble beginnings as a member of the modern classic sitcom's ensemble cast.

NBC Universal

"'The Office' was absolutely everything to me. I mean it is my beginning and my end. I'm pretty sure at the end of my career I'll still be known for Jim. That was my first experience with Hollywood. It was the first creative family I've ever had. In many ways, they will always be the most important people in that most important experience in my career. So yeah, if they did a reunion, I would absolutely love to do it."

Jim Halpert: Iconic Prankster

Jim Halpert became one of the most endearing characters in the workplace comedy. He started from a humble starting sales at paper company Dunder-Mifflin to becoming an inspiring leader. His prank war with Dwight (Rainn Wilson) provided some of the funniest moments of the series. He often makes Pam (Jenna Fischer) his partner in crime in his pranks. Their relationship was one of the keys to the long-running series' success.

Krasinski never imagined the scale of how popular The Office became since the American series had more episodes than its British counterpart.

"The Office was so big at the time, but I think a lot of people were afraid to cast certain cast members in anything else because they were just known as that one thing, which I completely understood. It wasn't an aggressive anger towards it. It was just a reality that I think I wasn't, if I'm honest, genuinely prepared for."

After "The Office"

Once the series completed its run, Krasinki moved on to directing more projects and took on more series roles. Following his warm reception in the film The Hollars (2016), he followed up with the military thriller 13 Hours (2016). The role vaulted him to an action star landing him the title role in the Amazon TV series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan.

NBC Universal is rumored to be developing an Office reboot for its streaming platform Peacock. Krasinski acknowledges that while a reboot is a good idea, it depends on the accessibility of the cast. He spoke with Entertainment Weekly on how it can go down.

"Maybe we could do like a Christmas special or something. The British show did a Christmas special, which is like, 'Where are they now?' for one episode because I don't know how we'll get everybody together for 22 episodes"

Krasinski wrapped directing A Quiet Place Part II, the sequel to the 2018 horror thriller – set to release March 20.
