NYCC: Marvel Animation Promises More Ms. Marvel, Black Panther, Venom

Last Sunday, Marvel Animation brought its Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers Assemble series to New York Comic Con. SVP of Animation and Family Entertainment Cort Lane, story editor Mairghread Scott and voice actors Vanessa Marshall (Gamora) and Kathreen Khavari (Ms. Marvel) stopped by the convention to tease the future of their animated shows, including the introduction of Venom, Avengers: Black Panther Quest and more Ms. Marvel.

Lane kicked off the panel with the first half of Spider-Man episode 15, “where we bring Venom into an episode.” The episode will officially air October 21, but those in attendance got a sneak peek, which revealed the alien symbiote had found a new host and was on the loose in New York City. In the same episode, Peter begins to tutor Flash Thompson, who is one of several characters to become Venom in the comics.

After Spider-Man, Lane revealed that the series will cross over with Guardians of the Galaxy Season 3, which recently explored in the “Symbiote War” storyline in Season 2. “Those storylines come together with this storyline… in one big symbiote story,” he explained.

“We decided that… we have the symbiote, so we consider them ours… we decided to do a crossover,” Scott added. The opening of Guardians of the Galaxy Season 3 will be a two-part crossover with Spider-Man.

He also announced that former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada will have his very own role in Spider-Man. “The coffee house that is used frequently… is called Cup of Joe’s,” he said. “Joe Quesada will appear as himself as a proprietor of Cup of Joe’s.”

Lane then moved on to Guardians of the Galaxy. “Season 3 finds the Guardians finding fame and fortune, but this is after” a storyline tied to the Guardians theme park attraction in Disneyland. According to Scott, all but one member of the Guardians will screw it up. “It is our living large story arc,” she explained. Additionally, “we really wanted to highlight the breaking out” of the Collector’s collection. The Collector will create torture chambers for each individual Guardian.

Lane rolled a clip from Guardians of the Galaxy Season 3, which finds Star-Lord and Gamora trying to convince one of the Collector’s guards to let them into a forbidden area. The guard, modeled after and voiced by Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, doesn’t believe them despite Star-Lord’s efforts.

“It’s been a real pleasure,” Marshall said of her time on Guardians of the Galaxy. “Everyone gets along so well… We love Marvel, but we love each other also. We’re usually breakdancing in between takes… For some reason, we take the most breaks, we eat the most food, and we finish the earliest.”

“We introduced the ‘Black Vortex’ arc,” she continued. “In order to save ourselves, we go through the Black Vortex… it’s our goal to sort of reunite at the end of the arc. I think where Gamora wakes up is sort of her worst nightmare.”

“We wanted to not just experiment with different types of stories, but different lengths of stories and explore different characters,” Scott added. “We just didn’t want to leave anything on the table.”

Each character will get their own signature style in the “Black Vortex” storyline. Gamora’s segment will look like a Disney animated movie. Tara Strong, Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey will guest in the episode as three singing animals, who sing “The Whistling Song” as they make her clean up a cutesy little cottage.

“They turn into these murderous villains,” Marshall revealed. “Yeah, they’re not so nice, and I end up having to deal with that and of course reunite with the rest of my gang this season… They’re not nearly as cute when they’re mad.”

As to Avengers Assemble, Lane said, “The shorts that open this season are really from Ms. Marvel’s point of view.”

“Ms. Marvel is a very passionate person, and in this season she has to team up with the other heroes to save other Avengers and I think it’s a lot of pressure for her and she’s kind of freaking out,” Khavari revealed. “She’s geeking out along the way. She works with some of her favorite heroes.”

“Ms. Marvel will be appearing in more projects as we move along that we can’t announce today,” Lane added.

“When I first got to play Ms. Marvel… it was literally and it still is a huge, huge honor,” Khavari shared. “I had known about Ms. Marvel… and to have a woman Muslim character out there in media that doesn’t fit a horrible stereotype of what it means to be Muslim that’s a hero… it’s one of the most important characters out there today.”

According to Khavari, “Ms. Marvel really is starting to balance out” the bad portrayal of Muslims. “I do think the media has a very, very strong power to shape our opinions, shape society, and to have a powerful role model out there who’s Muslim… we need more Ms. Marvel-type characters out there.”

“We’re going to be spreading Ms. Marvel around like she’s peanut butter,” Lane reemphasized.

He then moved onto Avengers: Black Panther Quest, which will focus on Black Panther and his sister Shuri and how they interact with the Avengers.

Marvel Animation will make eight more Funko shorts featuring characters from throughout the Marvel Universe, including Spider-Man, Thor, Ant-Man, Captain America, Venom, Loki and Doctor Strange.

After airing a trailer for a new LEGO short starring the Guardians, Marshall said, “Gamora’s voice was a little higher… they were really featuring the father-daughter” relationship. “It was more playful, but we had a blast doing it.”

Black Panther will also get his own lego special: Black Panther: Trouble in Wakanda.

“We have just launched Marvel HQ, a massive destination on YouTube and the YouTube kids app,” Lane announced. The app will feature full episodes of Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, Avengers and more and can be accessed online at YouTube.com/MarvelHQ. “We have launched already with 50 video files and there are hundred more to come,” he revealed. “We’ll be featuring our first two seasons of Avengers.”

Asked if fans will see more diverse characters in the animated shows, Lane said, “Marvel works hard to make sure our stories our based in the real world” and, as such, includes different ethnicities and more. “We’ll be featuring them in our shows, and also we have some upcoming shows that highlight more of those characters… and that’s all I can say.”

Additionally, there are “no plans yet but a lot of thoughts” about Silk being in Spider-Man. However, Miles, Anya and Gwen are on the path to becoming superheroes.

Lobo: The Main Main Is Immortalized in Funko Pop! Form

The Main Man is getting his very own Funko Pop! vinyl. This fall, DC Comics bounty hunter Lobo will arrive at comic shops in Funko Pop! form as a PREVIEWS exclusive figure. Two versions of the Pop! will be released: one regular and one “bloody.”

Both Lobo figures feature his signature chain, cigar and sidearm, though one is a little more roughed up than the other. Sold separately, the figures come “in a collector-friendly widow box” and retail for $11.99 each.

Debuting in Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen’s Omega Men #3 in 1983, Lobo was introduced as a mercenary and bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia. Since then, he has helmed a few titles of his own. Most recently, he appeared in the DC Rebirth event series Justice League vs. Suicide Squad and even briefly joined a version of the Justice League at Batman’s request. The character has also made the jump from comics to television, famously appearing in Superman: The Animated Series as voiced by Brad Garrett. He has gone on to appear in the Justice League animated series, Young Justice and Justice League Action. He was also referenced in The CW’s Supergirl, though he never turned up on screen.

The Lobo Funko Pop! vinyl is now available for pre-order in comic shops.

NYCC: Funko Brings Exclusive Boba Fett, Rogue One Pop!s to Comic Con

Funko is going intergalactic for New York Comic Con. The toy manufacturer has unveiled its line of Star Wars exclusives for the fall event, and anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is heavily represented. The recent film will get four NYCC-exclusive Pop! figures, including “Action Pose K-2SO,” “Saw Gerrera with Hair,” “Jyn Disguise With Helmet” and “Death Star Droid.”

Rogue One won’t be the only Star Wars film to get some Funko love. Funko will also throw back to the original trilogy with two new bounty hunter Pop! figures of Dengar and Boba Fett. The Boba Fett Pop! will be a deluxe figure that includes the Slave I, Fett’s iconic ship. The new figure finds Fett taking his ship for a spin.

Funko has also introduced New York Comic Con exclusives for DC Comics, Game of Thrones and WWE’s Zack Ryder. The toy manufacturer has plans to announce more NYCC exclusives next week.

This year’s New York Comic Con takes place Thursday, October 5 through Sunday, October 8 at the Jacob K Javits Convention Center in Midtown Manhattan.

Funko’s Inhumans Toys Double Down on Lockjaw

If you watched the trailer for Marvel’s Inhumans and immediately wanted your own teleporting dog, you’re in luck! Toy manufacturer Funko has gone all-in with Lockjaw for their new line of Inhumans figures. The line will include several of their traditional Pop! vinyls as well as plushes of the Inhuman family’s beloved dog.

The Lockjaw plushie will come in two sizes: 5 inches and 12 inches. However, the 12-inch version of the Lockjaw plushie will only be available at Toys “R” Us. Both plushes will be available in September.

Lockjaw will also get his own Pop! vinyl figure alongside Maximus the Mad and Queen Medusa. Like the 12-inch Lockjaw plushie, the Medusa figure is also a store exclusive and will only be found at Hot Topic. All three figures will go on sale in August.

The eight-episode series centers on the Royal Family of the Inhumans, a race of genetically advanced humans with extraordinary powers introduced in 1965 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Marvel’s Fantastic Four.

The first two episode of Inhumans will premiere Sept. 1 in IMAX theaters, followed by their broadcast debut Friday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

The drama stars Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Iwan Rheon as Maximus the Mad, Serinda Swan as Queen Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Mike Moh as Triton and Sonya Balmores as Auran.

WBTV Announces Arrowverse, Black Lightning, Krypton & More SDCC Panels

Comic-Con International in San Diego is almost upon us. The star-studded convention will kick off in just under a month, and Warner Bros. just gave DC Comics fans plenty of reason to celebrate. The studio announced its lineup for San Diego Comic-Con 2017, which includes beloved series like The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as well as upcoming shows Black Lightning and Krypton.

The WBTV bonanza will kick off on Wednesday evening with special sneak peek pilot screenings. From 6 pm – 10 pm in Ballroom 20, WBTV will screen pilots for DCTV series Krypton, Black Lightning and Teen Titans Go! in addition to Deception and Unikitty on Wednesday, July 19.

Regular SDCC panel programming will pick up Thursday morning with Teen Titans Go!, which runs 10 am – 11 am in Room 6A. Justice League Action will also have its own panel from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm in Room 6A.

On Friday, Young Justice kicks off the day in Room 6BCF from 10 – 11 am. iZombie follows with a panel from 11:15 am – 12:15 pm in Ballroom 20.

Saturday is a big day for WBTV, which takes over Ballroom 20 for most of the day. Riverdale will get the day started with a panel from 11 am – 11:45 am. The Arrowverse block begins with Supergirl at 3:30 pm – 4:10 pm; continues with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (4:10 pm – 4:50 pm), Black Lightning (4:50 pm – 5:10 pm) and The Flash (5:10 pm – 5:50 pm); and concludes with Arrow (5:50 pm – 6:30 pm). Meanwhile, in the Indigo Ballroom, Krypton will host its own panel from 1:15 pm – 1:45 pm, the Lucifer panel will run 1:50 pm – 2:50 pm and the Gotham panel will kick off at 2:50 pm and run until 3:50 pm.

WBTV’s lineup will conclude on Sunday with a Supernatural panel in Hall H, which runs 10:30 am – 11:30 am.

The panels are expected to host a number of actors, though Warner Bros. notes that “series stars and creative teams scheduled to attend are subject to change.” At this time, KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Tom Ellis, Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Dominic Purcell, Caity Lotz, Cress Williams, Grant Gustin, Jesse L. Martin, Tom Cavanagh, Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, Willa Holland, Emily Bett Rickards, Rose McIver and more are scheduled to be in attendence.

The WB also released a video to hype up their SDCC lineup. The video, seen below, finds puppies taking over the lead roles on shows like Riverdale, iZombie, The Flash, Supergirl and more.

Marvel’s Unbelievable Gwenpool Lands Her Own Funko Pop! Vinyls

Gwenpool is making the jump from comics to action figures. Funko Pop! has announced that Gwendolyn “Gwen” Poole — Marvel’s Unbelievable Gwenpool — will receive her own line of vinyl figures next month.

Funko Pop! will release three separate variant versions of Gwenpool: unmasked, with her mask and katana and, finally, with her mask and cell phone. The mask and cell phone version will be available exclusively at Toys R Us, while the unmasked variant will be sold only at Walgreens. The mask and katana version is not exclusive to any one retailer.

Gwenpool is a recent Marvel creation, having debuted last year in “Howard the Duck“ #1 as a backup story. Since then, she has starred in her very own title. As her name suggests, Gwenpool appears as an amalgamation of Gwen Stacy and Deadpool in the same vein as fan favorite character Spider-Gwen, who exists in a world where Gwen Stacy was bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker. Gwenpool claims to be from “the real world” and, believing that everything around her is fictional, she is an irresponsibly violent character. Though lacking in superpowers, she uses her extensive knowledge of the Marvel Universe — including every hero and villain’s secret identity — to her advantage.

Funko Pop’s! Gwenpool figures arrive in stores this February.

Naruto Shippuden Funko Pop!s Are Headed to a Store Near You

Funko has an incredible list of properties in its Pop! line of vinyl figures, and they aren’t slowing down anytime soon. The company has just announced a new line of “Naruto Shippuden” Pop! figures, which will feature characters such as Kakashi, Sakura, Tobi and Naruto himself.

Several different versions of Naruto will be made available this winter, including “Rasengan,” “Sage Mode” and “Six Paths Sage Mode.” The “Sage Mode” variant will only be available at GameStop, while the “Six Paths Sage Mode” variant is exclusive to Hot Topic.

Funko’s “Naruto Shippuden” Pop!s arrive this February.
