Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Blu-Ray Remaster Announced

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Blu-Ray Remaster Announced

Warner Bros. today announced a high-definition Blu-ray remaster of the 1993 Batman: The Animated Series spinoff movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. The feature-length film was the cinematic continuation of the animated series and featured familiar characters like Batman and the Joker, along with new nemeses and a romance that could have put an end to the hero that is Batman.

Mask of the Phantasm, directed by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, follows Batman as he tries to uncover the identity of a masked vigilante who has been murdering mobsters and pinning the crime on Gotham’s most notorious and entrench vigilante – Batman himself. The movie digs into Batman’s past and pinpoints the exact moment at which Bruce Wayne decided to become the Caped Crusader.

The devious Phantasm leads Batman on a chase around Gotham as the Dark Knight tries to unravel a knotted bundle of deceit woven in Gotham’s extensive crime network. The movie features an all-star cast of voice actors including Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Abe Vigoda and Dana Delany.

The film proved so popular that two novelizations were released in 1993, followed by a comic book adaptation by Kelley Puckett and Mike Parobeck that was eventually included in the VHS release of the movie.

Mask of the Phantasm was originally released in standard definition on LaserDisc and VHS in 1994. The remaster will up the resolution to 1080p, while leaving the aspect ratio open for viewers to decide. The remaster will support both an updated 16:9 aspect ratio and the film’s original 4:3 aspect ratio. Subtitles will be included along with English DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 Stereo sound and a bonus theatrical trailer.

Warner Bros. has not yet announced a release date for the Batman: Mask of the Phantasm remaster.

Robert Downey Jr. Offers Avengers: Infinity War Set Visit in Omaze Video

Robert Downey Jr. Offers Avengers: Infinity War Set Visit in Omaze Video

“Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr. has teamed up with charity organization Omaze to invite one lucky donator and a friend onto the set of “Avengers: Infinity War.” The winner will be selected from a pool of donators who contribute at least $10 to Random Acts Funding through Omaze. The winner will be rewarded with a visit to the set of “Avengers: Infinity War,” the latest installment in Marvel’s “Avengers” film series.

The winner will also get to have lunch with the actor. Airfare and hotel accommodation will be covered, and the winner will also work with Downey Jr. to select a Random Acts Funding charity project, where the accumulated contributions will be donated.

Campaign perks for the “Avengers: Infinity War” Omaze campaign include numerous t-shirts featuring Iron Man and Spider-Man, an Iron Man Funko POP! signed by Downey Jr., a 1/4 scale Iron Man figurine, a signed film still and a signed piece of mystery concept art, among others. The fundraising campaign will run until June 15, 2017.

Random Acts Funding is a nonprofit organization that encourages random acts of kindness around the world. The nonprofit was founded in 2009 by “Supernatural” star Misha Collins and Lisa Walker to organize and disperse United States stimulus money for nonprofit projects. One such project was the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, which occurred mere weeks after the founding of Random Acts Funding, then known as MinionStimulus. The fledgling nonprofit raised over $30,000 in disaster relief funds in short order and went on to raise several hundreds of thousands of dollars for Haiti. The organization’s current project is building a high school campus in Nicaragua.

Omaze is a donation-based fundraising organization that teams with celebrities and brands to raffle once-in-a-lifetime experiences, like an outdoors excursion with Bear Grylls or a visit to the set of an upcoming “Star Wars” film. In each case, one lucky winner is chosen from a pool of donations. The size of the donation determines the number of raffles entries the contributor submits. The larger the donation, the more raffles entries. Larger donations also award various campaign perks in the form of merchandise.

Jungle Batman Funko POP! Strips Down the Dark Knight

Jungle Batman Funko POP! Strips Down the Dark Knight

It’s not difficult to conjure up an image of Batman in your mind: There’s the cape, the cowl, the pointy ears, the utility belt and the rough sash made of animal furs. Or … maybe not that last one. Except for this one time.

RELATED: Funko Teases “Justice League” Movie Pop! Vinyl Line

The latest Funko POP! figure, exclusive to Funko-Shop.com, recalls one of Batman’s stranger adventures, from all the way back in 1952. As it turns out, there was a single issue of DC Comics’ “Batman” in which both the Caped Crusader and his sidekick Robin were forced to strip down to their most basic of basics after a shipwreck stranded them on a jungle island. Of course, the Dynamic Duo had good intentions: They were simply trying to transport the Sinister Eight to Satan Island when things went a little haywire (but that’s only to be expected when you’re en route to a place named Satan Island).

“Batman” #72 has a whole host of unique moments, like scene in which a black panther attacks Robin, but Batman comes to his sidekick’s aid … and knocks out the big cat with a massive branch. At one point, Batman and Robin are almost able to make it off the island in a purloined yacht, only to be seized by a massive octopus.

The Jungle Batman Funko POP! retails for $14.99. It is a limited-run figure of which only 10,000 will be made available.

Funko Debuts Wonder Woman Diana Prince POP! Figure

Funko Debuts Wonder Woman Diana Prince POP! Figure

The Funko toy company has revealed its POP! figure of Diana Prince, the alter ego of the Amazonian princess and superheroine Wonder Woman. The figure, available exclusively from the Entertainment Earth storefront, depicts the heroine in her civilian attire as glimpsed in trailers for DC Entertainment’s upcoming “Wonder Woman” movie directed by Patty Jenkins.

In the film, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) adopts the persona of Diana Prince after leaving her home island of Themyscira and venturing into the world of men. She quickly finds herself embroiled in the military politics of World War I alongside her accomplice Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). She dons the garb and mannerisms of the time to blend in, but, as the figure shows, she is a warrior at heart.

RELATED: New Wonder Woman Trailer Has Us Excited (and Just a Little Worried)

The POP! Diana Prince figure wears a nondescript bowler had, thick-rimmed glasses and a heavy brown coat, but she also brandishes a removable warrior’s shield and hidden vambraces, which are tucked away just under her coat sleeves. The figure stands at 3 3/4 inches tall and is the only Diana Prince POP! ever created by the company.

First appearing in “Sensation Comics” #1, the origin story of Wonder Woman’s Diana Prince alter ego has changed multiple times over the years. The earliest recount has Wonder Woman, whose name was simply Princess Diana of Themyscira at the time, purchasing the identity from a U.S. Army nurse serving in World War II. After finding the nurse alone and sobbing, Wonder Woman learned that her husband was in South America and that the nurse lacked the funds to visit him. Wonder Woman traded the nurse a large sum of money for her credentials and the woman later went on to reunite with her husband.

Later versions show Wonder Woman forging the identity herself, or winning it in a test of skill. DC Comics’ Post-Crisis interpretation of Wonder Woman completely did away with the Diana Prince identity, and instead simply referred to Wonder Woman as Diana of Themyscira while she was out of costume. The result was that Wonder Woman had no alter ego and operated openly as a superheroine. Instead, the Diana Prince identity was retconned into a codename which Wonder Woman would occasionally adopt while undercover.

Debuting in theaters June 2, “Wonder Woman” is a production of DC Entertainment directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Connie Nelson as Queen Hippolyta, Ewen Bremner as Charlie and Elena Anaya as Doctor Poison.

Sculptor Turns Funko Pop! Figures into Detailed Works of Art

Sculptor Turns Funko Pop! Figures into Detailed Works of Art

Funko’s line of Pop! figures might have an iron grip on the licensed, cutesy collectible market, but one artist has taken the toy line and elevated it to an art form. Carlo Wendell Gomez’s custom Funkos company, iGeek Customs, adds a highly-detailed flair that simply isn’t present in the original minimalistic Pop! figures, which bank on extreme stylization and accessibility in lieu of the detail often found in licensed figures.

RELATED: Funko Unveils Wonder Woman Movie Toy Line

Gomez’s Funkos build on the base figures’ simplicity, retaining the large eyes, wide heads and squat bodies that have come to define the brand. The result is a premium line of collectibles. One of his latest creations depicts Doctor Doom seated in an intricately ornamented metal throne, robed in a green cloak, braziers blazing on either side of the imposing figure.

Doctor Doom is the first in Gomez’s line of premium figures and includes an accompanying box that mirrors the giant, swinging wooden doors of Castle Doom, headquarters of the mad Latverian tyrant. Soon, Gomez will release a symbiote series, which looks to bring together Marvel’s four toughest symbiotes: Venom, Carnage, Antivenom and Toxin, and he’s already crafted a series based on the entire Batman family.

Gomez has been making custom Funkos since 2015, but he’s far from the only game in town. Custom Funko Pop! figures are a burgeoning gray market, with everything from Pokemon to “Silent Hill’s” Pyramid Head boss for sale if you know where to look.

Giant-Sized Thor’s Hammer & Batarangs Could Be Yours This June

Giant-Sized Thor’s Hammer & Batarangs Could Be Yours This June

Many consider Batman and Thor to be larger than life, but NECA Online is taking that literally. The company has produced two over-sized props based on comic book properties: a massive batarang and a giant Mjolnir, the hammer wielded by Marvel’s Thor. Both props will be made of foam and stand at roughly four feet wide.

The over-sized props, which will both become available in June, can be used as decorations or as part of a wacky costume, though neither will be particularly suited for their original intended purposes of fighting crime and thwarting frost giants.

RELATED: Funko Unveils Spider-Man: Homecoming Toy Line

Batarangs first appeared in “Detective Comics” #31 back in 1939. They were originally depicted as flat metal blades shaped like bats that were shown to return after being thrown, much like the boomerang. Batarangs have evolved significantly over the years; now, they can be folded to fit in Batman’s utility belt, while others can be detonated on — or after — impact. It goes without saying that NECA Online’s batarangs neither fold nor explode.

Thor’s Mjolnir debuted in 1962’s “Journey into Mystery” #83. The hammer was created when Odin defeated a cosmic storm called God Tempest and sealed its power inside a chunk of mystic Uru metal. The star that was used to forge the hammer exploded after the work was done and may even be the reason why the dinosaurs went extinct in Marvel canon. Only Thor can wield the hammer in the comics, but — thanks to NECA Online — now you can too.

No price has been announced

Power Rangers Character Posters Focus on the Team’s Morphin

Power Rangers Character Posters Focus on the Team’s Morphin

Lionsgate has released a new set of “Power Rangers” pictures featuring each of the rangers striking a heroic pose. The upcoming “Power Rangers” film features brand-new designs for the rangers’ iconic suits, and the newly released images get up close and personal with the heroes’ attire.

“Power Rangers” is a reboot of the 1993 children’s show “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” The new film will follow in the original series’ footsteps, charting the transformation of five small town teenagers from ordinary kids to superheroes charged with defeating a legion of aliens and their sinister witch leader, Rita Repulsa.

Last week, Adi Shankhar, showrunner for the recently announced Netflix adaptation of the video game series “Castelvania,” said he is working on another kind of “Power Rangers” reboot—a dark and gritty one that’s aiming for an R-rating. Meanwhile, earlier this week, GameStop announced it will release an exclusive line of glittery Pop! Television figures that harken back to the original “Might Morphin Power Rangers.” For Valentine’s Day, the “Power Rangers” Twitter account crossed the movie franchise streams when Rita Repulsa took over, tweeting at the “Hunger Games” account.

Debuting in theaters March 24, “Power Rangers” is a production of Lionsgate directed by Dean Israelite and starring Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks.

GameStop Gets Exclusive Glittery Power Rangers POP! Figures

GameStop now has an exclusive line of glittery POP! Television figures celebrating the “Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers,” ahead of the feature film rebooting the series, “Power Rangers.” The figures include the five main rangers from the original series — yellow, red, black, blue and pink — in their solid, noticeably glittery, colors.

“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” debuted on the Fox Kids afternoon weekday block in 1993. The series originally aired in Japan under the name “Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger,” with later seasons drawing from “Gosei Sentai Dairanger” and “Ninja Sentai Kakuranger.” The series was heavily adapted for release in America, with much of the original shows’ plots being rewritten, costumes changed and characters added or wholly removed.

The original Japanese series were part of Toei’s long-running “Super Sentai” series—“sentai” meaning “task force” or “fighting squadron.” The series, which still airs today as “Uchu Sentai Kyuranger,” is part of the tokusatsu genre, which combines sci-fi and fantasy-based drama with special effects to create entertainment aimed at children.

Those limited-edition two-packs — Superman and Wonder Woman, Doctor Strange and Black Panther, Captain America and Iron Man, and Batman and The Joker — set you back $40 each if you bought them up at the show. However, those offered in March as part of the official launch look to be much more reasonable on your wallet, setting you back a mere $9.99 per figure.

Available at launch are Marvel’s Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Black Widow, DC’s Batman, Batgirl, the Joker and Robin from “The LEGO Batman Movie,” and Belle and Beast from “Beauty and the Beast,” just in time for Disney’s live-action adaptation.

London Toy Fair Unveils Death Note, Naruto & My Hero Academia Funko Pops

London Toy Fair Unveils Death Note, Naruto & My Hero Academia Funko Pops

At the London Toy Fair, Funko revealed concept art for eight new Funko Pops and two new Dorbz spanning three different anime franchises. The new figurines include characters from the “My Hero Academia,” “Naruto” and “Death Note” series.

The “My Hero Academia” Funko Pop line features Deku, All Might, Katsuki, Tenya and Ochako, while the “Death Note” Funko Pop line boasts characters like Ryuk, L and Light. The “Naruto” line will introduce Naruto and Sakura as Dorbz, which differ from traditional Funko Pops in that characters sport cheerful smiles and closed eyes; Dorbz come in three sizes.

The “My Hero Academia” series follows Izuku, a young boy who enrolls in a superhero academy despite having no superpowers whatsoever. This is a problem because, in Izuku’s world, nearly 80% of the world’s population has some super ability. The first season of the “My Hero Academia” anime, which aired in 2016, is directed by Kenji Nagasaki. A second season is in the works.

“Death Note” follows the genius, ethically stunted Light in his quest to purify the world of evil after he finds the mystical Death Note, a book that can kill anyone whose name is written in it. The “Death Note” anime is directed by Tetsurō Araki and aired between 2006-2007.

“Naruto” is an anime epic that follows a young boy, Naruto, in his quest to become a hokage — that is, a respected ninja. The “Naruto” anime is directed by Hayato Date and aired between 2002-2007.

There’s no word just yet on exactly when the new anime Funkos will be released, but expect to see them on store shelves sometime this year.
