DC Sucks While Marvel Liquidates – The Daily LITG, June 7th 2020

The world seems like a terrible and strange place sometimes, but fandom still brings us together. These are strange times, but The Daily LITG is becoming a valuable way to quantify just what comic book geek culture is up to in this time of trial. Yesterday there was a confluence of retailer response to DC distribution changes, Gerry Conway's reaction to how police use the Punisher skull and Marvel liquidating a bunch of omnibuses. Welcome all, to the daily Lying In The Gutters, a long-running run around the day before and the day ahead. You can sign up to receive it as an e-mail here.

FOC, one year ago

Here's a look at what comic book publishers were sending to Final Order Cut-Off, one year ago today. A snapshot from what once was.

  • Dark Horse has the latest Empowered Vol 11 TPB from Adam Warren. Easy to miss, if you have devoted fans of that series. Like me.
  • Also from the horse, Aubrey Sitterson and Fico Ossio are launching their new series No One Left To Fight #1.
  • Year Of The Villain cardstock covers and crossovers kick off at DC Comics with Deathstroke #45, Harley Quinn #63, and Justice League #27.
  • DCeased has done so well for everyone, #3 is solicited accompanied by #1 reprint.
  • There's the launch of Doom Patrol: Weight Of The World #1, returnable to retailers who order what they did of Young Justice #1.
  • There's the launch of Lois Lane #1, returnable and utterly superb.
  • Tom King and Kubert Superman series for Walmart gets its direct market debut as Superman: Up In The Sky #1
  • Over at IDW, Kyle Baker is writing Black Panther – and retailers who match or exceed 85% of orders for Marvel Action Black Panther #1 with Marvel Action Black Panther #2 get it returnable with a $.20 per copy fee on returned copies.
  • 50% of total orders of Crowded #7 will be fully returnable.
  • Thumbs #2 alongside #1 second printing of #1. Match or exceed 80% of order for Thumbs #1 for 50% returnability on Thumbs #2.
  • Postal Deliverance #1, Space Bandits #1 and Sea Of Stars #1 and launching from Image Comics – the latter two are fully returnable.
  • Walking Dead #193 must be a keeper considering how #192 did – and there's a #192 Commemorative Edition as well.
  • Marvel launches Aero #1, spinning out of Agents Of AtlasRoy Thomas and Jerry Ordway reunite for Captain America/Invaders: Bahamas Triangle, and we get one of the Prodigal Son one shots for the Fantastic Four.
  • Immortal Hulk #20 has been jumping up the numbers, and the New Mutants #98 Facsimile has the potential to be anther Hulk #181.
  • There are two Star Wars launches too, Finn#1 and Target Vader #1.
  • Buffy #6 gets a couple of new covers for FOC as usual…

  • Test #1 by Christopher Sebela and Jen Hickman is launching from Vault Comics, and will be Fully returnable
  • While Dave Franchini relaunches Beth: Oath Of Thorns #1 from Zenescope

Comic Book Events happening today

There would also have been signings, appearances, symposia, all manner of comic book-related events. But a few have gone online, and here are some still happening today, on the Daily LITG.

Comic Book birthdays today

There may not be much of a party atmosphere right now. All depends on which state you are living in. But comic folk are still getting older and still celebrating that special date. With eleven years for us as well.

  • Larry Hama, GI Joe writer.
  • Maddie Ricchiuto, Bleeding Cool writer
  • Christina Diem Pham, producer of Marvel Strike Force
  • Tucker Stone, former writer of Bergen Street Comics

Funko Layoffs Will Now Include Funko Funkast And Social Staff

This pandemic has taken its toll, and we will continue to still see the fallout in the months to come. One big hit inside the toy community is the layoffs at Funko. We have already seen reports that Funko will be cutting back shipments this year, as well as postponing and canceling a lot of their upcoming collectibles. During the ongoing pandemic, Funko did close all their corporate offices and their two big HQ stores in Everette and Hollywood. Newly added sanitation and safety precautions have been included, but that has not been enough.

The hits just keep on coming as Funko has announced more layoffs are here and will impact 250 jobs at their home Everett base. This will reportedly save the company $1 million, and even top management is taking 20% pay cuts to try and catch up. Most of these layoffs will start at the end of June, with the end coming hopefully in September. These layoffs have already begun to appear in the most shocking way as Funko makes major marketing team members hang up their coats.

Funko Collection Funko Logo

This is a huge surprise for Funko as this team mainly consisted of the hit toy podcast Funko Funkast. These changes will impact the company in the future from the content we see online to the live-streams, gaming events, and even more possible future virtual cons. After the success of the Virtual Con for ECCC, I am quite surprised Funko would let go some of their most prominent and most valuable members go. The community will be reeling in for these crazy changes, and we will all be watching in on what Funko's next moves are.

The real question now is this the end of Funko, and could we see the decline of one of the biggest collectible companies out there? Only time will tell, but our hearts and collections are with all those Funko members who have had say goodbye. We appreciated everything you have done, and it has a pleasure and a wild journey we all have been on. Safe travels friends, and when one door closes, another opens.

Space Force is Ready for Take Off with Upcoming Funko Pops

The new comedy Space Force has finally made its debut on Netflix. The comedy series shows off the people behind the scenes working at establishing the newest military branch. The sixth armed services branch, the United States Space Force has its challenges ahead and Mark Naird is ready to accept those challenges. General Naird is portrayed by the hilarious Steve Carrell and Funko made him one of the highlights for their first wave of Pop vinyls. There will be two separate General Mark Naird figures with one being a Target exclusive showing off his new Space Force uniform. Each figure features a similar mold with an aircraft in hand. Speaking of Target Exclusives, Ben Schwartz character F. Tony Scarapiducci will also be in this wave. Holding his cell phone he is ready to tweet up about his newest Funko Pop vinyl. The last figure is the Space Chimp Marcus as seen in the 2nd Episode "Save Epsilon 6". This figure also features the same mold as the Umbrella Academy Pogo but with a spiffy new outfit. Each of these are a nice and refreshing start to a new series of upcoming Pops.

Space Force fans will be very excited to get their hands on these figures. These are only rough draft figures and are currently still in development. Some of these could be canceled if certain properties do not get approved. If Space Force makes its launch, I'm sure we will see more characters released in the future. Pre-orders for all of the Space Force figures can be found in one place including the Target Exclusive figures. They are not scheduled to release until 2021 and you can find them located here.

Today's Funko Shop Exclusive Pop Is the Mythical Kraken

Funko is ready to unleash the mythical sea monster, The Kraken. This will be the newest Pop to release in their exclusive Pop Myths line. The Pop Myths line has been picking up a lot of traction lately with some of their recently released Pop like Medusa gettings values of up to +$100. It is very hard to predict what figures will or will not be popular but that is the risk of collecting. This new design will be the first 6" in the series and is well worth this size. The Kraken is colored with blue and purple design and the monster is holding a ship. The elegance of this creature comes alive with this Pop and its cute Funko design will be a beloved collectible for any Pop Myths collector to Kraken fan.

The Funko Pop Myths Kraken will be limited to 2 purchases a customer. They will be priced at $20 each and you will be able to find the link for them located here. The expanding world of their Pop myths line is a great set of figures. They are capturing myths and legends and given them a Funko twist which will reach their audience nicely. While I can't tell you if this figure will be worth anything for price collectors it will be a great addition to any fans collection. We do not get as many 6" Pops anymore so it'll be nice for fans to bring the mighty Kraven home and make their collection really Pop. I'm sure they will continue to expand this line and I would love to see a couple more designs for Bigfoot and Loch Ness Monster. Only time will tell what will be on the horizon and don't forget to check out some of the other Pop Myths still available on the Funko-Shop today.

Funko Funkoween All the Spooky Reveals in One Place

Funko Funkoween was a nice break from reality to see what will be upon us in the future. Of course this whole reveal was themed around Halloween and Horror. This is not a bad thing as horror fans never have enough collectibles out there and Funko sure delivered. We got some amazing confirmations of some Pop lines teased during the Toys Fairs earlier this year and some new waves entirely. Some of these very pleasant surprises like Zombieland getting their Pop debut and will have a Zombie Bill Murray. Edward Scissorhands will be returning to the Funko Pop game since 2013 with a whole new wave of figures. Other big list reveals were Corpse Bride where both characters from the Tim Burton animated film get Pop-ified. One of my favorite announcements was the Marvel Zombies figures. Not only is there common reveals but the wave is getting retailer exclusives, mystery minis, and some kick ass Funko Pop tees. These figures are the perfect combination of superheroes and horror in a very fun and amazing way.

All of these reveals were very well done and get us excited for the fall. There were a lot of big moves getting new Funko Pops in the future like Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, The Craft, Scoob, and even Child's Play. From a 10" Chucky to the Chase Mayor from Nightmare Before Christmas there are plenty of things to get excited about. Most of these Funko Funkoween Pop reveals we're common releases and you will be able to pre-order them here. Of course with collecting there are exclusives so check the photo gallery below to find out what figures you need to be in the lookout for. Some retailer exclusive pre-orders are available today but others won't drop till the August and September 2020 release dates. Check out all of the Funko Funkoween Reveals below.
